A Penny “Fur” Your Thoughts

Sitting quietly among the grasses, this black bear seems lost in thought. With that sweet expression and faraway gaze, you can’t help but wonder what’s on his mind.

Perhaps he’s pondering life’s great mysteries. Or maybe he’s simply wondering what’s for dinner.

Not every quiet moment needs an explanation. Sometimes, the beauty of the wild is found in the questions it leaves unanswered.

It’s a corn for breakfast (..and lunch…and dinner) time of year! These bears have huge appetites and gorge themselves during late summer and fall as part of hyperphagia to build fat reserves for winter. They spend up to 20 hours a day searching for food, gaining about 3 pounds a day.

Spent some time behind the lens @biltmoreestate two days ago, and the scale of this place is hard to wrap your head around.

Built for George Vanderbilt and designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, this French Renaissance château in Asheville spans roughly 175,000 square feet with 250 rooms. America’s largest home welcomed Vanderbilt’s family and friends on Christmas Eve, 1895. Talk about setting the bar for hosting the holidays.

But what kept my camera up was the detail. Carved stone faces. Towering rooftops. Sunlight catching the balconies and turning the whole façade gold.

Over 130 years later, the work of those craftsmen still stops people in their tracks. That’s a hell of a legacy to build.

We almost didn’t stop. 🌲 We’d passed a sign for a historic site on the drive up Wayah Bald, and on the way back down, with just enough daylight left, we turned in. We knew nothing about it, which made what we found feel like a gift.

The Wilson Lick Ranger Station was built in 1916 as the first ranger station of the newly formed Nantahala National Forest. 🏡 The displays near the small parking area tell the story, and it’s the small details that stick. The first District Ranger lived here with his wife, and her first trip took all day from Franklin in a Model-T, stopping about once an hour to cool the radiator. 🚗 Later, a newlywed couple spent two years here and remembered snow sifting through the cracks in the walls on cold winter days. ❄️

Standing there in the last golden light, with the weathered shingles and the old stone chimney, you can almost hear how quiet life was for the rangers who protected this forest from wildfire. 🔥 It’s a rare, unpolished look at the very early days of the Forest Service.
