Whilst I do think the hinged, Aussie version is kinda cool, I favour the more subtle UK version.

Four hours behind the wheel of a 76-year-old Land Rover on Sunday, taking in some fairly epic roads along the way.

Mt Glorious in pitch darkness is quite an experience when your stopping power comes courtesy of four drum brakes and the steering requires a degree of negotiation. Yet she never missed a beat.

There’s something wonderfully absorbing about travelling any distance in an old Land Rover. You listen to every mechanical noise, feel every change in the road through the wheel and become acutely aware that maintaining momentum is generally preferable to having to find it again!

I’ve deliberately never fitted a phone charger to this Land Rover. When the battery dies, so does the connection to everything else. No maps, no messages, no glowing screen telling me where to turn or what I’ve missed. Just mechanical honesty, the road ahead, and the quiet, unbroken focus of getting home the way it used to be done.

Just some of the many things I love about my 109” Series IIA Land Rover.

In our 15 years together she’s seen lots of change, some quite subtle whilst others more dramatic. Would you change anything else?

She started off with a set of rusty white 8-spokes, then switched to traditional limestone steelies followed by a colour change to black. I’m delighted with the final revision to Sherwood Green.

Tyres with purpose - Maxxis Mud Terrains.

Since plated fasteners finish it off nicely.

Not only that but also note the lack of aperture to access the bonnet latch. Military clasps hold this baby down.

Further note, British radiator panel - unusual in Australia.

No nonsense. Just a satisfying click.

What’s not to love? Remove your door tops for an entirely re-envisioned driving experience!

They don’t go anywhere else.

Dual action, super handy for the grocery run.

In the absence of square plates, this is a neat alternative.

Rare as hen’s teeth and not to be confused with the current crop you can buy from Land Rover.

I’ve always loved this decal.

Immeasurably nicer than the plastic affairs.

Another rare find here in Australia. This Land Rover was fully optioned.
