Making progress! So close to sailing on our own. Spent the morning practicing docking. Outbound Sailing was very patient with my many reps to get to this point. Follow along to see more of our sailing journey.

I’ve talked about learning to sail for years.

This weekend I finally stopped talking about it and started.

ASA 101 was step one. I’ve got a hell of a lot to learn, but that’s kind of the point.

The long-term goal is bigger than earning certifications or spending weekends on the lake. I want to be able to confidently take a boat offshore, explore places we’ve never seen, and eventually make sailing a real part of our life.

No idea exactly where this ends.

But I know where it started.

⛵ ASA 101 — done.

A few years ago I was sitting with someone I loved who was dying too young. He was 55. So was I.

And somewhere in that room the question arrived and wouldn’t leave: “If it were you — would you be able to say you lived a happy and fulfilled life?”

The answer was no.

What followed was the hardest, scariest, most necessary thing I’ve ever done. I’m not going to fit it into a caption. But I will tell you that on the other side of that answer is living on Lake Travis, learning to sail and other new things like golf and Spanish, preparing to explore life in a new city, and discovering a version of my life I really like.

The wind is finally at my back. It’s never too late to change course.

37 today. 🤍

36 was such a good year. As (both) boys settled into elementary school, I found a little extra space to step into new things: learning to sail, riding horses with my mom, volunteering at the barn, and really enjoying this new season.

I’m grateful for the chance to grow, for God’s goodness, for Sam’s steady support through all of it and quality time spent with people we love.

Here’s to 37 🥂 more peace, more purpose, and more of what makes life feel full.

Officially completed my ASA 101 certification on Lake Travis with @outbound_sailing 🎉 Started in may with an intro to sailing course that got split into two days because of a storm and then jumped into ASA101 in August where we got most of the course done in the two full days it takes, but had to wait on some wind before finally checking off our sailing skills in October!

The journey has really only begun to becoming a competent sailor. But we did it! And I’m proud of us @laurenlovesdrippingsprings ⛵️🎉

Excited to earn more hours on the water and then eventually take ASA103. .But first, more practice

If you’re interested in learning how to sail and looking for a good school in the Austin and hill country area I highly recommend Outbound Sailing, it was a really great experience learning as someone with no prior sailing knowledge. I really enjoyed it and felt that the environment was perfect for learning.

From their website, more on them: “Sailing lessons specifically designed to build the confidence to bareboat charter, sail, or cruise on your own.
Learning to sail is more than just classes and certifications. Our classes maximize time on the water and provide you opportunities after certification to build experience and confidence as skipper and crew.
We use the curriculum and standards set by American Sailing and currently teach ASA 101, 103, 104, 105, 106, and 114 certifications.”

@outbound_sailing thank you for a great first intro to sailing lesson! Had so much fun with @laurenlovesdrippingsprings @susan__labelle out on the water and can’t wait to do it again! I’ll try to remember everything we learned between now and the next one: Don’t get your thumbs ripped off, into the wind, away from the wind, focus on steering while you do it all 😅 I’ll get there! Ready to get back out there! ⛵️

Second to last photo by @laurenlovesdrippingsprings who also happens to be an amazing photographer!
