@vcuchs VCU has unveiled a historical marker honoring its first LGBTQ+ student organization, the Gay Alliance of Students, which won a federal court case to gain official recognition from the university in 1976. Archana Pathak, Ph.D., VCU’s assistant vice provost for faculty affairs and a faculty member in the Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, said the students in the Gay Alliance of Students 50 years ago and the King George Middle School students today show that a small group of individuals can change the world. “Students are also a pivotal force of change. Never underestimate what a small, committed group of students can do,” Pathak said. “In my 30-plus years in higher education, the most compelling change has happened because students spoke up.” Click the 🔗 in bio to read the full article.

When one door closes… Another swings wide open! Last week we posted about losing space in Carytown that we’d used for years as an LGBTQ+ art events pop-up spot. The response from our community has made the sting from that loss far less heavy feeling. Multiple businesses and friends reached out and we have some really hopeful stuff in the works... And 11 local businesses supported us this past week by donating a percentage of their sales For queer folks, especially right now, it can be difficult to feel seen, to feel like there are safe places, and to feel like were not having A LOT of doors shut in our faces. But, There are a lot of people who do care. And those who show up 🫶 A HUGE thanks to all the incredible businesses for partnering with us for our ShopOUT effort! @shelflifebooksrva @jasperbarrva @minglewoodbakeshop @shyndigzdessert @harrisonstcafe @babesofcarytown @stircrazyrva @worldofmirth @montanagoldbread @janetsrva @thehenricotheatre AND… A BIG THANK YOU to @dogmarva for being our new Carytown home for our LGBTQ+ artist market pop-ups! SAVE THE DATE and join us on Dec. 6th for a very gayyyy holiday market at Dogma in Carytown!

Allowing LGBTQ families like these to be seen means that, hopefully, they won't be ignored when we get to the ballot box in November. Allowing LGBTQ voices like mine to be heard means that our community's calls to action and cries for support won't fall on deaf ears. Allowing everyday expressions of LGBTQ joy and sadness to be felt and shared by others means that whatever jaded views we have about politics won't desensitize us to our collective humanity. This isn't really about what nine Supreme Court justices might do someday in the future. We can't control that. This is really about us. About what we will do now - to affirm and recognize one another as people. And that, we can control. *** Thanks to @myvpm & @styleweekly for supporting the vision behind this months-long writing project of mine and helping to manifest it, on both page and screen. (Especially @macaulayhammond, @cbbaldwin23, @maryscottfletch & @19red.fuel. 📸: @scottelmquist.) I don't ask this often of my followers. But if you have a platform - any platform - please use it to share the "Chosen Families" story and video (links in bio) with your social circles. And of course, vote YES to Question 2 on November 3rd election day (or sooner)! @vaformarriage @equalityva

@theadvocatemag For almost 50 years, Vicky Hester embedded herself in the Virginia LGBTQ+ community through her philanthropy and by running Babes of Carytown, one of the country’s oldest lesbian bars. Now, Richmond City Council officials are cementing her legacy, voting Monday to rename the street next to the business Hester operated “for those who needed acceptance” as “Vicky Hester Way.” Hester, who died in September 2025 at 71, opened Babes of Carytown in 1987 in the Carytown neighborhood of Virginia’s capital as a steakhouse, but it soon became a gathering spot for lesbians and eventually the LGBTQ+ community. “It’s always been about pride, and community, and a place to not only come together but struggle together,” Hester told RVA Magazine in 2025. Babes of Carytown, which calls itself “the oldest lesbian bar on the East Coast,” sits at the corner of West Cary Street and South Auburn Avenue; officials voted to rename a section of South Auburn Avenue in Hester’s honor. The measure, backed by 5th District Councilmember Stephanie Lynch and Mayor Danny Avula, WWBT reports, allows the Department of Public Works to install signs at each end of the block. “There’s no words for Vicky Hester,” The Richmonder reports Lynch saying about the original measure. “She brought light everywhere, and she still brings it because she created a space where everyone can be loved.” Hester “was more than a business owner,” Travis Warren said to the council in support of the measure. “Through Babe’s of Carytown, she created a place for generations of people to experience life and find home and family.” NBC affiliate WWBT reports Hester hosted fundraisers for local nonprofits at the venue, backed initiatives with Virginia Pride, and donated food to the Metropolitan Community Church of Richmond’s food pantry. The designation is extra meaningful in a state like Virginia, where middle school students have had to threaten legal action just to start a Gay-Straight Alliance club, and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is still in existence. 🔗Visit the link in our bio to read more 📸: Christopher Wiggins for The Advocate
