Continuing our Pride Month series, Dan Nightingale ACO reflects on working on LGBTQ+ stories for screen

Project: It’s a Sin
Camera Operator: Dan Nightingale ACO @dan.dan.cameraman

“Where to start? This is probably still my favourite job to have worked on. There’s so much to say about this show. Written and created by Russell T Davies @russelltdavies63 , directed by Peter Hoar @peterhoardirector and shot by David Katznelson BSC @katznelson.david , it explored friendship, joy, love, shame and sex within the UK gay community against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic in 1980s Britain.

It was such a powerful and important piece of drama — giving a voice to the hundreds of young men who suffered and died as a result of homophobia and ignorance, while also speaking to the strength of those affected and the allies who stood beside them. It helped inform a new generation about a devastating period in history, and somehow within all of that, it was also funny!

I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of telling this story, and to have worked alongside creative stalwarts of the queer community, helping bring to life stories of love, anguish, sorrow and joy. ‘It’s a Sin’ is an important piece of British drama, of LGBTQ storytelling and in a time when we see rights being questioned and in some places rolled back, a reminder that the fight for equality is still ongoing, and PRIDE is just as important as ever.”

Wow well where do I even start with this one....

Can't even imagine telling little old 18 year old Jack Patience one day you'll get to work with your favourite band @blossomsband on a film set 8 years later! Would have just been a dream! The lads are class.

So so SO grateful for this job whether it be the amazing people I met & worked with along the way or just the memories I made in Manchester; what a city.

Had the best time working on Finding Emily.... what an absolute dream job would relive it 100x over. Miss the gang loads.

Hope you can all get out to your local cinema and go watch it, it's fucking good!! (Great soundtrack too)

An ode to Manchester🐝
