Following on from yesterdays post that went absolutely bonkers (!)… I thought I’d do a little follow up, about how we can best look after our nails now the temperature has dropped.

Down in Cornwall we are facing storm Austen, and it’s been hailing on and off all day ❄️ As a nail tech, I already know that clients will be coming in soon, with more lifting, more breaks, and maybe experiencing more brittle nails.

Here’s some of my tips on how we can stay on top of breakages this winter 🤎

WAXING ISN’T JUST ONE SKILL. 👀

And this is exactly why I teach strip wax and hot wax separately.

Yes, they’re both methods of hair removal, but that’s where the similarities start to change.

Two types of wax.
Two application techniques.
Two different removal methods.

And a LOT of information to take in.

Strip wax requires an understanding of application pressure, thin and even distribution, strip placement and controlled removal.

Hot wax requires a different approach entirely. Understanding consistency, temperature, application thickness, setting time, creating your removal edge and working with different hair growth patterns.

And that’s before we’ve even started discussing skin types, contraindications, anatomy, positioning and adapting our techniques.

It’s a lot to digest, especially when you’re learning something completely new.

Which is why I believe in breaking education down.

I want my students to understand WHY they’re doing something, not just remember the order in which I showed them.

Because being able to remove hair and understanding how to wax are two very different things.

I teach strip waxing and hot waxing as individual techniques, giving students the opportunity to understand, practise and build confidence in each before bringing those skills together.

My goal isn’t to teach you how to complete a treatment. It’s to teach you how to become a confident, knowledgeable waxing specialist.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or returning to refine your technique, education should give you the foundations to keep developing long after you’ve left the classroom.

The Camino nails out in the wild 🩵💛

🥾The Camino de Santiago is a network of historic walking pilgrimage routes across Europe, leading to Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain.

A side-by-side comparison of nails with and without cuticle oil use, showing you the difference a little hydration makes. 🤎

I’ve been doing a bit of an experiment on myself. For the last 2 and a bit weeks, I’ve been oiling my left hand and not oiling my right. I wanted to show how much of a difference cuticle oil can make to your nails, when used consistently.

If you are a gel polish user, sometimes a bit of BIAB through the winter months will give you a bit of extra strength while our nails dry out in the cold!

Notice the lifting at the backs of my nails, the dry skin, the dry cuticle area, etc., on the 2nd picture. Whilst there is still a tiny amount of dryness on the 1st picture, there is little to no BIAB lifting 🤌🏼
