Happy FALL 🍂🍁🥮

Dark academia gets a lot of attention this time of year (hi, hello, I am part of the attention!), but sometimes I hear from people who want the campus setting without the secret society, ominous professor, or body in the library 📚

So: here are some campus novel recs without the murder. These are books full of dorm rooms, complicated friendships, academic ambition, first loves, class dynamics, and that very specific feeling of trying to figure out who you are while surrounded by people doing the exact same thing.

A few favorites:

🎓 FOSTER DADE EXPLORES THE COSMOS
🎓 THE ACADEMY
🎓 NORMAL PEOPLE
🎓 REAL LIFE
🎓 THE RACHEL INCIDENT

Plus, I had to add PREP, which has sat atop my TBR for far too long!! This fall is my year and I am publicly committing to it.

What’s your favorite campus novel that isn’t dark academia? 👇

Ibis by Justin Haynes

Don’t let the cover fool you. 🙃

I didn’t read the synopsis before diving into this one, and based solely on the pink cover and pretty ibis bird, I thought I was getting a light, fluffy fiction read. Boy, was I wrong.

This novel takes you on an extensive journey through historical fiction, slave narrative, magical realism, spirituality, culture, and some truly beautiful storytelling. Set in New Felicity, we move through different timelines. From the town’s days as a sugar plantation to present day. Following a plethora of characters whose stories are all connected to eleven year old Milagros, a Venezuelan girl searching for the mother she was separated from as a child.

This book had SO many layers. It explores Venezuelan migration, the experiences of Venezuelans fleeing and settling throughout places like the Americas, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and the trafficking Venezuelan women endured. Hany’s storyline, in particular, gave me the slave narrative aspect I love in historical fiction. And the magical realism element, with the presence and protection of ancestors, added such a beautiful layer to an already rich story.

Although this took me a while to read, I was SAT. One thing I love about historical fiction is being transported into another culture and getting the opportunity to learn pieces of history I may not have encountered.

This was an emotional, layered, spiritual, and at times surprising journey. Definitely a reminder of never judging a book by its cover. 🫣

Bite Size Horror

Qotd: what are you drinking to wake up today?

I'm on cup two of coffee ( swipe for mug of choice)

Cheers to the start of sweater weather!

I truly think we have seen our last 80 degree day in Minnesota for a long while. Today is a high of 62 and rain and I'm so here for it.

For a cold blustery day, here are some bite sized book recs to send chills down your spine, each on a classic!

Stary Stories to tell in the Dark by collected by Folklore and retold by Alvin Schwartz- my kids are starting to get into this one! A great collection of spooky short stories.

Psycho by Robert Block- a motel stay gone wrong and a man with a bit of mommy issues.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson- a desperate chance at starting over takes a chilling turn.

Have you read any of these? Which is your favorite?

Fresh from my shelves are these 18 writers born in the month of September, from 1866 to 1986. I started this theme back in April if you want to take a look at previous months. As always, I am limited by what I have on my shelves. Please let me know if I made any mistakes, and who I should add to this list for next year. My next post will be about literary deaths that occurred in September (11 so far).

This set of writers come from Argentina, Austria, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the US writing in Danish, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

See any books you really like?

🌍📖 #womenintranslationmonth reading wrap-up 📚📊

I don't usually do a monthly wrap-up and save stuff like this for a yearly stats post at the end of the year, but it felt fitting to share a round-up of my #witmonth2026 reading as I am 1) genuinely impressed I read this many but also 2) I really did end up #readingaroundtheworld, which also makes me very happy! I managed to cover several genres too. Out of the 12 books I read - yes, TWELVE (that's a lot for this fatigued brain) - 11 were #womenintranslation❕

There are still a ton I want to read, both on my shelves and yet to acquire, so I certainly will continue to #readwityearround and encourage you all to do the same! There are far too many to be able to contain to just one month. I mean, have you seen my growing collection?! 😍

There is so much to glean from reading translated works; you don't just travel, you learn, you experience, your eyes are widened, and hopefully your heart grows bigger, more compassionate.

💬 Did you read any WIT and if so, where did they take you? Did you discover a new favorite?

My second and third #womenintranslationmonth reads! Ironically, while both are set in Japan, neither were originally written in Japanese. Swipe to learn more info and read my review for each in their respective captions!

Thanks to Europa Editions for sending me a gifted copy of The Hour of Fervor a while back. When I realized it was part of a duology I decided to read #ASingleRose first as it would give better context. Could they be read as standalones? Even out of order? Sure, but I preferred doing it in publication order.

They focus on Rose and her father, Haru, and are centered on loss and grief, family relationships, love and second chances. While I haven't yet picked up One Hour of Fervor I do intend to. I primarily did the audio for this one and found myself having to go back over chapters, so I personally would suggest a physical copy, although I have nothing against the narrator. Some books are just not audiobooks, you know? I personally felt there was a lack of depth to the characte

☎️ Imagine getting one more chance to pick up a phone and speak to someone you lost, what would you tell them?

The Phone booth at the Edge of the World by Laura Imai Messina is a breathtaking moving tribute to the resilience of our human heart. Inspired by the true story of the Wind Phone (Kaze no Denwa) in Otsuchi, Japan, this novel shows how healing often begins in the simplest rituals.

✨It’s amazing to see that tribute booths and wind phones have quietly started to appear across the world located away in misty forests, coastal headlands and mountain paths. I was closing my eyes imagining myself stepping inside a glass booth, feeling the weight of an unplugged rotary receiver in my hand and dialing a phone number I have memorized by heart🥹

In that space of yours, disconnected from any physical wire you can finally whisper the everyday stories, the updates, the shared jokes and the love you never got to express, trusting the breeze to carry your words wherever they need to go.

Messina constructs the whole narrative incredibly. Interwoven with poetic reflections, fragments of memory and random everyday moments, the book reminds us that grief isn’t a task to finish but a landscape we learn to navigate. It captures the complex, delicate emotions of finding new joy without feeling like you are betraying the memory of those who came before.

It is not a fast-paced plot and for few readers it might be slow but it is truly surrounded by genuine emotions and character depth. I might have loved this more because of the grief and healing it carried.

If you stood inside the wind phone right now, whose number would your hands dial first? Share your thoughts below ✨❤️‍🩹

I read Bullet Train by Kotaro Isaka. No, I haven’t seen the Hollywood film adaptation. It’s a novel about five assassins on one train with conflicting missions coming to realize the true reasons behind their missions. Several POVs that constantly overlap in interesting ways, forcing the reader to make their own inferences. A good, propulsive summer read. #thriller #books #booksintranslation #theoverlookpress #abrams
