PARTY FOR — ILLEGAL: RAVE FLYERS OF THE 90s @NowadaysNYC

For me, playing some of my favorite classic rave records this Thursday on one of the best soundsystems in the world will be the culmination of close to 8 years of work.

A huge relief to be done! But it’s also going to be a massive thrill to show off all the hard work by Mandy Gou @overripemango, Maria Perna @perrnaa, Sean Johnson @seanmjohn12 & all the contributors who donated flyers, did interviews and anyone who helped bring it all together. Many listed below..

If you’re in NYC come celebrate with us on Thursday! Link for cheap advance tickets in the bio.

Apologies again that the production was so complicated that pre-orders are delayed until late November or early December. We hope everyone will be blown away though. We will have a few advance copies available at the party!

Fantasy bleeds into reality when 16-year-old Lolo becomes entangled in a Freudian loop circling a strawberry shortcake and her mother, Norma. The deeper Lolo sinks, the thinner the membrane between the room and the dreamscape grows until it becomes impossible to say where the mother ends and the daughter begins.

Deborah “Devyn” CHUANG @deborah.devyn is a Taiwanese-American filmmaker working as a director, screenwriter, and producer. Their debut short, Mom, if I Were a Vampire, premiered at NewFest in New York City before screening at festivals including the Taipei Film Festival. It later became an online cult hit within the queer community, drawing thousands of reviews and comments on Letterboxd. In 2023, they were named a semi-finalist for the New Voices Filmmaker Grant by NewFest and Netflix.

Set in 1970s Glasgow, Wah Yen follows Chen, a young queer and neurodivergent Chinese immigrant whose inner world begins to unfold through an unexpected kinship with James, a Scottish shipbuilder. Moving between intimacy, displacement, and the desire to belong, the film explores how marginalised people create forms of home within unfamiliar places and through one another.

Wei ZHANG @wei_zhang_wei_zhang is a filmmaker and visual artist from China, now based in Glasgow. Working across moving image, collage, experimental sound, and hybrid media, their practice explores migration, gender, bodily transformation, and the limits of language. In “Wah Yen “Wei brings together 3D animation, archival footage, and drag performance to construct a non-linear visual language shaped by Chinese cultural heritage, queer experience, and collective memory.

Created in collaboration with Clarinda Yung Tse, Katherine Ka Yi Liu, Siyao Li, Wei Zhou, and Xuan Gao, the film embraces the collective intelligence of queer Asians.

LU and Christophe are a young gay couple in Paris. During the election, LU ,a foreigner in the country he lives in finds out that Christophe means to vote for a candidate who has no place for someone like him. It‘s never argued out loud, but it settles between them and changes how LU understands where he stands, both at home and in the relationship.

Kai XU @kai___xu was born in China and has been based in Paris since 2017, working across film, sound, and writing. His films follow people and places in the middle of change , displacement, transformation, the way a life slowly finds its footing. Writing this one, he wanted to sit with the Asian queer experience of immigration and desire, and with the fact that politics reaches all the way into how two people imagine a future together.

Home is rarely a fixed place. Across departures, returns, and detours, how do queer lives make home? Sometimes, it is found where alienation and desire
intersect.

Step into a mesmerizing visual experiment that blurs the lines between truth and fiction. Returning to Beirut from Toronto in a desperate search for his roots, filmmaker and lead actor Raghed Charabaty reimagines the days leading up to the fateful 2020 Beirut Port Explosion. Amidst a city of unrest, his character Amir
falls in love with a stranger by the sea, finding unexpected queer intimacy. When the tragic explosion occurs, it cares for nobody yet leaves behind
undeniable traces of desire that even destruction cannot erase.

-
Driven by scripted improv and New Wave wildlife esque cinematography,Lebanese-Canadian director Charabaty @charabaty.films crafts a deeply intimate narrative of exile
and memory. This stunning work has already captivated audiences globally, earning a spot in TIFF’s Canada’s Top Ten and winning the Grand Jury Prize at
Écrans Mixtes.

Home is rarely a fixed place. For many queer people, it exists between memory and movement, inheritance and reinvention.

Dive into a profoundly intimate documentary that captures the awkwardness, searching, and vulnerability of family ties. After marrying her wife in Switzerland, director Yue RAN @yue_ran__ returns to China, using the camera as a bridge to face the “elephant in the room” with her mother. When an unexpected event prompts the mother to reflect on her own marriage, an estranged duo is finally forced to start a long-overdue, honest conversation.

Drawing from her rich cross-cultural background, director Yue RAN crafts a courageous female narrative that has already captured hearts at Cinema du Reel, Queer East, and Clermont-Ferrand.

Followed by an online talk with director Anuparna Roy @annieroy09

Set against the relentless pulse of Mumbai, Songs of Forgotten Trees is an intimate exploration of selfhood, survival, and unexpected kinship. The film follows Thooya, a migrant and aspiring actress who navigates the city by leveraging her beauty and wit, occasionally trading intimacy for opportunity. When she sublets her sugar daddy’s upscale apartment to Swetha, a fellow migrant with a corporate job, these two women from seemingly different worlds discover a profound, silent empathy. As personal histories, desires, and lingering wounds resurface, their delicate connection is tested in a strange and tender unfolding.

Drawing from deeply personal memories and a desire to challenge the male gaze, director Anuparna Roy reclaims the narrative space for women to exist simply as themselves ,not as symbols, metaphors, or vessels of ideologies. Rooted in Third World cinema, this feature debut is a powerful testament to female agency and the often unheard stories of marginalized lives. As the director notes, she holds a pen ”not to craft happy endings, but to tell of miseries, of wounds that linger, of life as it unfolds.“

⏰ 21:30 | Open-Air Film Screening | German Premiere

Set in Isan, Thailand’s largest yet poorest region, Isan Odyssey is a striking hybrid documentary that weaves together historical incidents and pre/post-Cold War political uprisings. Following the rhythmic beats of Mor Lam,a popular folk music with Lao roots ,the film uncovers why this region has been cursed with endless misfortunes. Yet, amidst a land marked by bloodshed and tears, its people continue to smile, laugh, and fiercely enjoy life.

Award-winning director Thunska Pansittivorakul @thunska merges a disturbing incident in the Mekong River basin with the radical history of Mor Lam, a music genre once used as a tool of rebellion. Presenting a slightly different international cut due to severe censorship and lèse-majesté laws in Thailand, the director candidly notes: “Thailand is not a country where one can fully resist without consequence... No matter how courageous I may appear, the truth is that I continue to live in a persistent state of fear.” This film stands as a bold, urgent testament to defiance, risk, and the resilience of marginalized voices.

South Korea 2025 | 124 min | Korean with English subtitles

⏰ 19:00 | Film Screening
📍 Berlin | July 25 | 🎥 @sinematranstopia

South Korean director Joonho Park’s @juno.park.film debut feature 3670 shines a light on a rarely explored intersection. Cheol-jun, a young North Korean defector, has always felt isolated, forced to hide his true gay identity. When he finally musters the courage to step into South Korea’s vibrant gay community and forms a deep bond with his new friend Yeong-jun, a single, trivial misunderstanding threatens to shatter the fragile sanctuary he has come to cherish.

By navigating the boundaries between North Korean defector and LGBTQ+ communities, director Joonho Park breaks away from mainstream stereotypes. It’s a beautifully realistic portrayal that captures the universal tension and fear we all face when taking our first steps into a new society.
