This summer, the National Museum of the Aftermath operated out of @oxyarts as a residency and sound stage for the artist Cauleen Smith, who filmed scenes hovering between the real and speculative, each staging the internal negotiations of collective struggle: the gatherings, disagreements, and nuances of people trying to build something together within and alongside what remains. The Museum was also a space for many others, featuring a film series, reading group, broadsheet, radio show, and an open call to individuals and organizations motivated to confront the proposition that we are already living in an aftermath.

What if the most powerful story you could tell… is your own? 🎬
EPISODE 2 | MAIN CHARACTER LOADING…
“Wait… I’m the story?”

The journey continued with a question that would become increasingly important throughout the summer:

How do we communicate who we are?

ABT Master Teaching Artist David Guerra took communication off the page and put it into practice. Through interactive exercises, our Bloomberg Arts Internship students explored how we communicate not only through words, but through listening, observation, body language, presence, and how we respond to another person.

These are tools young people can carry with them into the classroom, college interviews, the workplace, creative collaborations, and everyday life.

Then Greta Gould helped our interns turn the focus inward as they continued developing ideas for their college personal statements.

What experiences have shaped me?
What matters to me?
What story can only I tell?

The connection between the two parts of the day was intentional:

Finding your story is one thing. Learning how to communicate it is another.

Through BAI, our young people weren’t simply preparing for college and future careers. They were practicing how to recognize the value of their own experiences—and how to communicate that value to the world.

8 Episodes. One Journey.

And we’re just getting started.

Follow @ArtsBT as we continue sharing the journey. 🎬

Occidental College’s Media Arts & Culture Department (MAC) is thrilled to welcome filmmaker and alumna Anahid Yahjian ’11 @medullacreative back to campus as the 2026 MAC Artist-in-Residence.

Yahjian’s work spans fiction, experimental, documentary and commercial modes. Questions of self, place, time, power, truth and memory are central to her storytelling practice, rooted in her experience of liminality as a fourth-generation artist of exile. Her residency will foreground the films she has made since graduation as blueprints for a demystified cinematic approach achieved through personal excavation, creative constraint and immediacy, and framed by a permeating ethics of equity.

As an Oxy alumna, her visit will be especially resonant for candid conversations with students about identity, creative vocation, inner life, family, and more expansive understandings of “success” in a rapidly changing moment for media and the creative industries. The residency will include a range of high-impact class visits, a Socratic workshop focused on students’ works-in-progress, and two public screenings open to the broader Occidental and Los Angeles communities.
