Braving the rain and cold on the lake! 🌧️🌊 We just wrapped up a quick but intense 2-day clinic with Camille and Romane, two talented sprint kayak sisters from France (U17 & U15).

⚡️ Despite the tough weather, we put in some solid work. We started with a full physical and technical assessment to identify their baseline strengths and weaknesses. From there, the focus was on giving them the specific tools and exercises they need to keep progressing at home.

👉 When you push for high technical quality at legit intensities, you quickly realize that preparation is never just physical or technical. Even without intentionally focusing on it, the mental side naturally comes into play. You see firsthand that they aren’t separate pillars—they all work as one.

💪 Loved the grit from these two. Keep putting in the work back in France! 🇫🇷🛶

Dampflok oder Taucher? Sei ehrlich. 😄

Ganz viel Liebe 🍃 Sasu

POV: the stairs stop being the hardest part of your day.

Getting out of breath on a flight of stairs isn’t only about fitness.

It’s often about how you breathe the other 23 hours.

Here’s the loop most people never connect 👇

How you breathe by day shapes how you sleep.

Fast, upper-chest, mouth breathing keeps your nervous system on alert.

Your body becomes over-sensitive to carbon dioxide.

So the moment you move, the urge to gasp kicks in early.

That same pattern follows you to bed.

Mouth breathing at night is linked to snoring, lighter sleep and more wake-ups.

And deep sleep is when you repair.

Tissue rebuilds. Hormones rebalance. Your brain clears the day.

Poor repair means you wake with less in the tank.

Stress runs higher.

Breathing gets faster.

And the stairs feel steeper.

Round and round it goes.

The good news?

Breathing is the one part of this loop you can retrain directly.

Breathe through your nose, day and night.

Breathe lighter, slower, low into the ribs.

Keep easy movement nasal. If you need your mouth, slow down.

Over weeks, your CO2 tolerance improves.

Oxygen reaches your muscles more efficiently.

Sleep deepens. Recovery follows.

Then one day you run up the stairs…

and realise you’re still nasal breathing at the top.

That’s the spring back in your step.

Not from doing more.

From breathing better, around the clock.

I’m teaching exactly how this loop works in my free breathing & sleep masterclass for women over 50 this Friday, 23 October (replay included).

Comment SLEEP and I’ll send you the link 🌙

It’s an Oxygen advantage breath belt. I’m wearing it so I can feel my ribs moving as I breathe.
As a woman who lifts and an Oxygen Advantage instructor, I’m exploring my breathing alongside my snatch practice. The belt gives me feedback I can actually feel while I train.

How are you breathing right now? 🌿

For most of my life, I breathed the way you see on the left: through my mouth, fast and shallow, high in my chest. I didn't realize it was keeping my body on constant alert, and for me that made my Tourette's Syndrome so much worse.

Learning functional breathing changed that. It didn't happen overnight, but slowing my breath down became one of the most powerful tools I have for managing my tics and calming my nervous system.

❌ Dysfunctional breathing (left)
• Breathing through the mouth
• Chest heaving up + down
• Shoulders lifting to ears
• Quick, shallow breaths
• Loud, effortful breathing
• Air stuck high in the chest

This is stressed breathing. It keeps your nervous system on high alert, even when life is calm.

✅ Functional breathing (right)
• Breathing through the nose
• Ribcage widening all around
• Shoulders soft + relaxed
• Slow, steady rhythm
• Calm, barely a sound
• Belly, sides + back all fill

This is calm breathing. It tells your body it’s safe to slow down, think clearly, and grow.

Try it for 1 minute today: close your mouth, let your ribcage widen, and slow everything down. Notice how you feel afterwards.

Your breath is the one part of your nervous system you can steer directly. That's where my inner work began, and it can be where yours begins too.

Which one feels more like you today, left or right? Tell me below 👇🏽

💾 Save this for your next stressful moment
🔁 Share it with someone who needs a calmer day

Patrick McKeown first wrote a children’s book on breathing in 2003. The Magical Breathing Tree is his latest book, written with teacher and Buteyko instructor Katie-Louise Daly so children can follow it themselves.

It’s a story about a boy called David, who breathes through his mouth and always runs out of breath before his sister does. Along the way he learns to breathe through his nose, find the right resting spot for his tongue, and breathe quietly “like a mouse.”

At the back of the book there’s a guide for parents with simple ways to encourage nasal breathing at home.

The power of directly training our breathing system 🫁

Functional breathing and learning to use breathing to reduce stress, improve sleep quality and recovery, and improve physical performance has been life changing for me.

12 months ago chronic stress, burnout and significant health challenges meant I could barely walk. Getting out of bed was a challenge. I could barely hold a conversation as I was mentally exhausted.

I’m now running 20k a week. I cycle. I swim. I hike. I lift.

Throughout 2026 I’ve trained my breathing system and I now teach and coach others as an Advanced Instructor @oxygenadvantage

Breathing training has allowed me to lower my perceived effort during exercise as my respiratory rate and heart rate are lower. I can increase the intensity and then use breathing tools post exercise to reset my state.

It’s had a transformative impact on my health, wellbeing, performance and my nervous system.

If anyone is curious about their breathing then I’d love to hear from you.

Gestresst? Atme mit. So lange du willst.
