Some trips are about the work, some about the people. This one managed both. Seeing the cats out in the world, catching up with old friends, and celebrating another year around good company. ✨❤️ 🐈

Earlier this year, I had gone to @thecloaksociety, a speakeasy at @ritzcarltonbangalore where hooded figures walked around serving us. When my Potterhead daughter saw the images, she promptly declared the cloaked figures “Death Eaters.”

I wrote an article and made a reel on it which somehow led me down a much bigger rabbit hole involving hidden doors, secret passwords, moody rooms, elevated plates and of course, cocktails that are outstanding works of art.

Pleased to share a larger piece of mine in @indiatoday on India’s evolving speakeasy culture - from Bengaluru to Delhi and Hyderabad, I spoke to the people creating these intriguing little worlds.

Thank you @half_a_bawa @theoutlier.hq @y.a.m.i.n.i_ @shivanihabib @radhikamisra1 @barbetandpals @olivedelhi @thehiddenclub.thc @ishnooorsingh @longformgram @afterdinnergoa @oxymorons.hyd @twinklekeswani @passcodeonly @passcode.hospitality @sheetalie @theleelapalacebengaluru @zlb23.in @intelliiquo @sonaliisokhal @script_pr @_shreyashreee @varshabala97 @sparkplug_inc for guiding me with this massive feature.

Warning: this list may cause spontaneous “one more drink?” decisions. 👀

Featured in our August issue: The original speakeasies flourished during America’s Prohibition era, when secrecy was essential. Almost a century down the line, that very secrecy has become theatre. The hidden entrance sparks curiosity, but what truly keeps guests coming back is everything that follows.

A similar philosophy is taking shape elsewhere in the country. Hidden behind a bookshelf inside Hyderabad’s 130-year-old heritage Country Club, Oxymorons is about finding harmony between things that seem opposite: old and new, local and global, familiar and unexpected. “The hidden door is just the beginning of the story, not the story itself,” claims founder Rehan Guha.

At Oxymorons, cocktails such as ‘Random Order’, made with soy, banana, Okinawa sugar and dark rum, and ‘Loud Whisper’, featuring chicken broth, Wai Wai masala and vodka, prove that guests are increasingly willing to venture beyond familiar flavour profiles.

My favourite from @oxymorons.hyd ‘s new menu? Clearly Misunderstood.

Dondakaya, rice vinegar, green chilli and tequila — not exactly the combination you’d expect to find in a cocktail.

But that’s the point. The quiet vegetable finally gets its moment.

Come try Clearly Misunderstood at Oxymorons and tell me what you think. 🌶️
