In Weezer’s 5 year absence post Pinkerton, it left a large void in the geek rock world. The mainstream flocked to other acts like Fountains Of Wayne and Nerf Herder, that were close to their sound. But no other band came closer to sounding like Weezer and completely original at the same time, than Ozma.

The band actually would form in 1995, but wouldn’t see a rise to fame until the early aughts. The album I’m reviewing today, was originally released in 2000 a time when a Weezer comeback was brewing under the surface and their Green Album was still a year away.

The record would gain a rerelease in 2001, but by that point Weezer had changed their sound to adhere to mainstream radio at the time. And naturally Weezer fans began to praise Ozma, for its authenticity and original feel that they emulated within their sound that current Weezer was sorely lacking.

The sincere lyricism, the chunky guitars and even the synths, were a perfect love letter to the original Weezer sound and yet at the same time you could tell this band was something new. There was a real pop sensibility within the band that made them super accessible yet within the confines of geek rock.

The band would continue to put out albums as the decade progressed, and even performed at Warped Tour. The Weezer nostalgia had begun, and as the band changed their sound the fans just missed what they were, and for a while Ozma was the answer.
