It’s big planting time here at the Field Center, as we expand our beautiful vegetable, herb, fruit and flower gardens. Led by Anya Smolnikova, who is spearheading the garden this year, our staff and work exchange team has been busy digging, building new beds, mowing, planting and weeding!

Serving up to 30 people at a time, our dining room and commercial-grade kitchen, stewarded by Lilianna Kane, work in concert with our gardens to process, cook and serve healthy, local food for our participants. We maintain a goal of providing 30% of our food costs from our own garden and to source the remainder from local farmers and merchants. We look forward to feeding you this season!

And we continue to extend our gratitude to all who have poured their energy into starting our garden, especially Nuria Bowart who has been our Garden Manager for the past four years, and Rachel Saudek, who was an essential part of our garden’s foundations.

THANK YOU!

SUMMER CI FESTIVAL RECAP 🌀
The Summer CI Festival was an incredible week full of rigor, exploration, and play. SetGo guided us through various practices to support focused and dynamic Contact Improvisation: sharing each other’s grounds, paying attention moment to moment, widening into roundness, solo improvisational scores, exploratory bodywork and anatomical curiosity, and focused containers for attuned jamming and witnessing.
Thank you SetGo [ @bradleytealellis @paulsinghdance @sarahandaustindance @slbaryshnikov + #AaronBrandes] for your wisdom and grounding presences.

I'm excited for a special month of teaching Contact Improvisation in NYC this September. After rich and provoking teacher exchanges this summer in Berkeley and Freiburg, I want to keep collaborating with my colleagues researching CI. So I've invited dancers who inspire me to co-teach each week. I look forward to seeing what emerges in these shared inquiries.

Contact Improvisation basics class every Tuesday in September.
6:30-8:30pm at 100 Grand St in SoHo, Bill Young Studio.
$20 cash or Venmo.

My first project as a director, Dancing, is officially out. If you’re allergic to clicking links that take you out of Instagram, here’s the whole thing in one convenient place. Otherwise, you can click the link in my bio to watch on YouTube.

The day after I first heard Zoe play this live, I begged her to let me make a music video for it. We met in the first year I moved to New York, when she opened for Archangels of the Wasteland. She was the first person in my life to refer to me as an artist and subsequently held all of my Sensitive Artist Feelings in the process of finishing this music video. It’d be enough to just be a massive fan of hers, but I’m so honored to also call her my friend. Love you, Firn 🖤

Some very special people were a part of making this, all tagged here. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

PANDA 1 RECAP 💫
PANDA 1 held many moments of tenderness, experimentation, performance, and grounding with the land. It was a truly wonderful week of work together! Lab sessions devoted to researching the many tools offered by Ishmael Houston-Jones and Keith Hennessy were accentuated by collective schemes; karaoke night, lunchtime with the forest, haircuts, bonfires, and ensemble field trips.
Thank you Keith and Ishmael and ALL the participants for your willingness to dive so deeply together. Thanks also to Anya, Leslie and all of our incredible Work Exchangers for their hard work in making and keeping the container so beautifully!

Join us for a Contact Improvisation fundamentals class! We will explore the spirals, pathways, and deep listening skills essential to practicing CI. Whether this is your first time exploring the form or a regular at jams, this class will offer tools to support your dancing and group awareness. All bodies are welcome, and everything can be modified. Reach out if cost is a barrier!

A little background on CI: Contact improvisation is a movement and social dance form initiated in 1972 as an exploration of the kinesthetic possibilities of bodies moving in contact and their combined relationship to gravity, inspired by a myriad of practices, including martial arts, modern dance, and meditation. Contact improvisers train in sharing weight, expanding somatic awareness and responsiveness, and navigating disorientation.

Piper Morrison is a dancer, improviser, and chef with a background in Contact Improvisation, Aikido, and contemporary dance. She is curious lately about what lies on the outside edges of risky weight sharing, modulation of tension and release, and finding where softness and rigor can coexist.

at ‘a soft opening’ cozy DIY loft space by the morgan L (RSVP for address!).

disclaimer: contact improv involves the possibility of physical injury. we follow the 1st rule of CI: “take care of yourself first.” by participating, you are responsible for your own safety & well-being. please listen to your body & move consciously.
