October 21st 2026 was the deadliest day of the war for the Russians army, suffering 2,250 casualties in a single day.

Ukrainian sources have linked the spike to intensified drone strikes (the Unmanned Systems Forces claimed a one-day record of 680 personnel hit by FPV and bomber drones around that period) and Russian infantry assaults, particularly small groups moving in the open in sectors such as the Pokrovsk/Dobropillya area.

These are Ukrainian General Staff estimates compiled from frontline reports. They are not independently verified in real time, and Russia does not publish comparable daily figures.

Independent assessments (such as from CSIS and ISW) have consistently shown very high Russian casualties overall, with 2026 monthly rates often exceeding recruitment levels and a casualty ratio that has shifted further in Ukraine’s favor due to drone warfare.

ISW has cited nearly 37,000 Russian casualties already in October 2026 (higher than all of October 2025) while noting limited Russian territorial gains.
