Apes & Androids record release party at Mercury Lounge on Jan. 19th, 2008.

Okay, I know I just did a post referencing A&A and Sigmund Droid but we just hit 20K followers so I figured I’d recycle the very first post ever on NYC Forgotten Years (from 2022). I swapped out some photos, did some light editing, and rewrote the caption so it’s sort of like a new post. Thanks for all the follows and shares!

This was the record release show for their only album, “Blood Moon”. It was a great record, in my opinion, but this band was better known for their insane live shows.

A&A always had pretty incredible costumes and props, even at small venues. For this show they had giant metallic alien heads with glowing red eyes all around the stage. It was subdued by their standards but still impressive.

A&A had a loyal following and always played to a packed house, regardless of how big or small that house was. This show was sold out.

The openers were Die Romantik and Sigmund Droid. DJ sets by Dirty Dick Kliegman, Finger on the Pulse, and Brion Isaacs.

Crowd shot from the Apes & Androids Bowery Ballroom after party at Fontana’s in May of 2008.

Apes & Androids sold out Webster Hall on this night and put on a hell of a show. Afterwards, they invited everyone out to the after party at Fontana’s, which featured a performance by Sigmund Droid, who were joined by David of A&A.

Between the energy of the Bowery show and the fact it was Sol’s (Sigmund Droid) birthday, the crowd was worked up into a frenzy. Everyone was dancing and singing along. The whole basement was packed, people were climbing and diving and all that. It was a really fun night of live music on the LES… and it makes me miss Fontana’s.

Sigmund Droid, with special guest David from Apes & Androids on guitar, at Tommy’s Tavern in Greenpoint, October 2009.

They played this show with Cerebral Ballzy, Hank & Cupcakes, Forest City, and Radio America. The cover charge was $3 and booze was very cheap at Tommy’s so this was a wild one. I was maybe kinda out of my mind at the end of the night and maybe got put in a cab and sent home.

We all know what Tommy’s came to be known for but before that it was a solid dive that would get some good bands crammed into that little back room.

Crowd shot from Sigmund Droid playing a Halloween warehouse party in 2008. I don’t have notes on this one but I remember some details. David from Apes and Androids played guitar with Sigmund Droid that night. Their set was awesome and the crowd was hammered and dancing around like crazy the whole time. There were a lot of college kids there, which might explain why people passed out all over the floor when we were leaving - it looked like a battlefield.

Let’s try something new. I’ll tell you all about a course I played. Let’s set up some guidelines. I’ll tell you the overall score - 1 to 5 - 5 being the absolute best. I’ll tell you about the clubhouse, how friendly the starters are, is there anywhere good to eat nearby?

What else do you want to know?

First up: Silver Lake Country Club
Where: Staten Island, NY
What’s great about the course: fun long par 4s, the guy sitting on his porch off the 11th green blasting Sinatra
What’s not so great about the course: the trees hanging into the fairways
How friendly are the starters: So friendly! The friendliest
!
Muni/Public/Private: Public
Best place to eat nearby: Lee’s Tavern for white clam pizza
Rating: ⛳️⛳️⛳️/5
