Get to know one of our artists, Pablo Lazo (@pablolazoart )
His work explores memory, time, and the quiet dignity of human experience through powerful figurative painting. With a strong emotional charge and a masterful use of light and gesture, Lazo creates scenes that feel intimate, symbolic, and deeply human.

Cuban artist Pablo Lazo (born 1987) lives and works between Los Angeles and Miami. His works, mostly oil paintings, explore the creativity and ingenuity developed for decades as a survival mechanism within Cuban society. To achieve this, the artist uses atypical supports such as bicycle wheels, pieces of wood, among others, creating a hybrid between painting and sculpture. One of the fundamental nuclei of this creativity has to do with the energy crisis that Cubans have lived through for a long time, symbolized in a home-made object called “chismosa”, a popular term given on the island to a type of makeshift kerosene lamp that has served to light the homes of many Cubans. “La chismosa” occupies an important place in Lazo's works, in a way that mixes humor with sadness and pain. These are works that exhibit a great mastery of pictorial technique while portraying one of the most important characteristics of Cubans: the ability to survive crises thanks to the power of imagination and the strength of a smile./ El artista cubano Pablo Lazo (nacido en 1987) reside y trabaja entre Los Angeles y Miami.

In 2013 I took time off from teaching and moved to Miami for 9 months. I lived in a small studio, sleeping on the floor in the closet so I could use the rest of the space for working and writing. I used a folding table with a decent chair I found beside a dumpster. It was a hard few months in some ways but a great gift of time and experience in others. It was in Miami that I first saw @zuckermanhartung’s work in person, not knowing then I’d be in class with her at Yale some years later. I’m grateful for my evenings walks down Biscayne Boulevard, the Thanksgiving dinner with @fernandomartinezcelaya, my lushly overgrown backyard, and the time I had with some good people. This is a cairn painting from that time.
