🔥 Ignite Change: Empowering Communities Through Higher Education

What does it look like when families see a place for their children in higher education? In this clip from our September Community Briefing, hosted with @pacificislandersforprogress (PiP) and @empoweredpi (EPIC), @ele.fifita of EPIC, Sina Uipi of EPIC (@brownskinl8dy ), and Kare’l Lokeni of the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Educators Collective share what this work can mean for NHPI students and communities.

Kare’l describes the hope that families and communities will know there is a support system waiting for them, so they can feel confident sending their children to college and seeing them complete their degrees. Ele closes with a message for everyone watching: carry the energy from this conversation into your own community.

✅ AB 2374, discussed during the briefing, has since been signed by the governor, creating a state designation for institutions serving AANHPI students.

🎥 Visibility vs. Service: Demand the Data

Being counted is not the same as being served. In this clip from our September Community Briefing, Frances Palu of the CSU AANHPI Student Achievement Program, a board member for @pacificislandersforprogress , breaks down why data disaggregation matters for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) students. When campus numbers lump NHPI students into broader groups, it becomes harder to see who is on campus, who is being served, and how funding connects to real need.

Frances speaks to the difference between visibility and service, and to what disaggregated data can mean for students, teachers, parents, and campus leaders. When the numbers show Pacific Islanders clearly, visibility becomes possible. That is the idea behind the PiP coalition’s work on education data, and the community voices behind it.

✅ Since this conversation, AB 2374 has been signed by the governor, establishing a state designation for institutions serving Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students, with data disaggregation provisions.

🚨AB 96 PASSES🚨

✨️Lived experience is expertise—and it should be recognized as such.💪🏽

✨️The California Legislature has unanimously passed AB 96, legislation that would remove the high school diploma or equivalent requirement for Certified Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists.

✨️By eliminating this unnecessary barrier, California can expand its peer support workforce and create more opportunities for people with hard-won lived experience to help others navigate mental health and substance use recovery.

✨️AB 96 now heads to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk.

✨️We join the County Behavioral Health Directors Association of California and Cal Voices in calling on the Governor to sign AB 96 and affirm that empathy, connection, and lived experience are powerful and essential qualifications.

✨️More hope. Fewer barriers. Greater access to recovery.

Building off our momentum this winter, CVPIA spent the Spring bringing the Central Valley to the capital buildings in Sacramento! Meeting with legislators alongside community and statewide partners, CVPIA has continued building relationships.

We are honored to be able to do this work and are grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the Pacific Islander communities of the Central Valley. Moving on to our summer organizing, we're looking to take what we learned in Sacramento during the Spring, back to our home cities and towns across the Central Valley.

Take a moment to see some of the moments our team had this Spring!

From our community and coalitionpartner:
@pacificislandersforprogress

Behind this statistic are generations of students navigating systems that have too often overlooked Pacific Islander communities.

Educational attainment is more than a number---it influences economic mobility, workforce opportunities, and community well-being.

To improve outcomes, we must first make Pacific Islanders visible in the data and invest in strateqies that support student success from early education through college completion.
