As we draw closer to 🏡 which for us is Flatbush + Crown Heights due to #socialdistancing, over the next few weeks we will share highlights from @iamcaribbeing’s past exhibitions + activations + collaborations showcasing Caribbean/LatinX culture + art + film. These stills are from ‘A Welcoming’ (2018) an investigation through an artistic and conceptual lens into how the #drawingroom or front room holds a precious and sacred space in many Caribbean households. More than a clean room where the most precious furniture and figurines are kept and preserved, the drawing room is also the focal point for many family’s memories, objects and celebrations. A space to feel empowered and nurtured and share traditions. What family memories do you have of gathering in the drawing room?

Bradley L Bowers (@bradleylbowers) explores the overlap between digital media and artisanal craft, achieving otherwise impossible objects. After earning honors and advanced degrees from SCAD, the Atlanta native founded his studio. He creates site-specific new media art installations, pop-up experiences, and bespoke pieces for fashion brands, art institutions, and private clients. As well as exhibiting work in Miami, New York, New Orleans, Atlanta, and Milan, his work is in a variety of permanent collections.

When asked about what inspires him he says, “When I first started I was inspired by shapes and forms more than anything, but as I have gotten more experience in the worlds of art and design, I find myself seeking inspiration from systems. For instance, I recently learned the mechanics behind how certain flowers "open" when they bloom. Those natural "mechanics" are completely integrated into the petals of the flowers, that type of thought, integration, and lack of ornament is really inspiring.”

Art Director @PACU checking in on y'all & giving you some Sunday reading 🥺☺️*~

Reading #EsmeraldaSantiago 📖 it’s sort of a rite of passage if you went to high school in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 Growing up, and all that going back and forth between my homeland and the diaspora 🗽 got me thinking about "How to Eat a Guava", a little story she has in "When I Was Puerto Rican":⠀
.⠀
.⠀
"I had my last guava the day we left Puerto Rico. It was large and juicy, almost red in the center, and so fragrant that I didn’t want to eat it because I would lose the smell..."⠀
.⠀
"...Today, I stand before a stack of dark green guavas, each perfectly round and hard, each $1.59. The one in my hand is tempting. It smells faintly of late summer afternoons and hopscotch under the mango tree. But this is autumn in New York, and I’m no longer a child.⠀
.⠀
The guava joins its sisters under the harsh fluorescent lights of the exotic fruit display. I push my cart away, toward the apples and pears of my adulthood, their nearly seedless ripeness predictable and bittersweet."⠀
.⠀
.⠀
🙇🏽‍♂️ Identity is a big part for a lot of us that have left the #Caribbean, maybe pushing our cart away from the guava by code-switching or forgetting certain traditions. As fueling as it may be, I do believe that patriotism can also be toxic, but having one leg here and another one there, we have the unique chance to experience togetherness in our traditions in a place like the diaspora, and look into the #FutureCaribbean.⠀

Your fear of looking stupid is holding back from being your best self! That sentence right there was what inspired my veganova journey. Putting your creativity out for the world to see takes courage but heres the thing ✨every day youre not doing something is another day where youre not working on making your dreams a reality! ✨It’s as simple as that tbh. Get rid of the excuses and the need to be perfect all the time. YOU👏🏽GOT👏🏽THIS BABE! ✨

Lastly for inspirations and other work, I'd like to share some of the publications I've collected as part of an anthology of contemporary Puerto Rican photography I began last year. As a way of beginning to expand the dialogue of photography and photobooks in the island, I've taken upon the task of creating this collection for present and future generations to come. Each author is tagged on their respective books! @pacu @rouzaud.camille @mario_la_rosario @supakid @stephsegarra [@meltzcollazo for @10x10photobooks , El Golpe del Río (The Coup of the River), available Oct. 9]
