Documentation of Saving Face | Performance by Elaine Grainger Presented as part of Thinning the Veil, Saving Face is a site-responsive performance that collapses linear time to explore historical and contemporary restriction. Taking place inside the Drawing Room of Malahide Castle, the piece stages a fictional dialogue by weaving together literary fragments from Virginia Woolf’s Orlando (1928) and Claire-Louise Bennett’s Checkout 19 (2021). By overlapping these texts, the performance folds nearly a century of feminist literature onto itself. Woolf’s exploration of the heavily encumbered, historically policed body collides directly with Bennett’s modern critique of constant self-curation, revealing that the societal pressures on women to maintain an unblemished public facade remain unchanged across generations. Extending an ongoing inquiry within the artist's practice into how bodies trace pathways, negotiate material thresholds, and reconfigure architectural environments, the choreography replaces flowing movement with a raw, mechanical rhythm. Guided by a relentless acoustic cadence, the performance introduces a fragmented, malfunctioning vocabulary that deliberately halts, stutters, and deconstructs physical form, disrupting the room's rigid etiquette and historic furniture arrangement. Through these fractured patterns of movement and stillness, the body actively challenges the architectural boundaries, the processed environment, and the castle's modern role as a controlled museum archive. By injecting an unrefined, living rhythm into a room built on both human restriction and the containment of the natural world, this performance disrupts the passive, untouchable nature of the museum display. It strips away the myth of traditional domestic polish, actively defying the archive and forcing the audience out of a romanticised past and into the absolute, immediate present. Performed by Cora Hickey reading Virginia Woolf and Sunniva Corr reading Claire Louise Bennett Thinning the Veil @malahidecastle is generously supported by @fingalcountycouncil @fingalartsoffice @cultureireland Department of Culture, Communication and Sport Photos by @padalog

On Sat 20 June we threw open our doors to the public for our fifth annual Open Day, a day jam-packed full of free performances, workshops, talks, tours, music, dancing, food and more. Take a look at what we got up to on the day! 💘 We had over 20 events running throughout the day, with highlights including our neighbours at @indigoandcloth who served up seasonal coffee specials, @dgirlostheatre who presented a condensed version of their hit play That’s Sooo Povo, and the iconic Sarah-Jane O’Regan (@electricgingerr) who returned with her ISL Disco. A huge thank you to Shelley Gibson and Vanessa O’Connell for ISL provision throughout the day, as well as to our artists and audiences for attending our Open Day this year.
