HELMET BRINGS THE RIFFS. THE LEGACY SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.

Before Down unleashed their Southern-fried sludge on Greensboro, @helmet_music took the stage at Piedmont Hall and reminded everyone why they've remained one of alternative metal's most influential bands for over three decades.

Formed in New York City in 1989 by guitarist and vocalist @pagehamilton_, Helmet helped redefine what heavy music could sound like. Their signature combination of crushing, stop-start riffs, unconventional rhythms, and stripped-down aggression laid the groundwork for countless bands that followed. From alternative metal to post-hardcore and the explosion of nu-metal in the late '90s, Helmet's fingerprints are all over heavy music.

And hearing that sound live is an entirely different animal.

There's something beautifully brutal about Helmet's approach. No unnecessary theatrics. No over-the-top production. Just precision, volume, and riffs that hit like a concrete wall. Hamilton's unmistakable guitar tone cuts through the mix with surgical precision, while the rhythm section delivers the kind of relentless groove that makes standing still damn near impossible.

What makes Helmet so compelling is their ability to create absolute chaos through control. Their music isn't built around flashy solos or conventional metal formulas. It's about tension, repetition, and those unmistakable rhythmic punches that have influenced generations of musicians.

Albums like Meantime, Betty, and Aftertaste helped cement Helmet's place in heavy music history, and decades later, those songs still carry the same abrasive edge that made them stand out in the first place.

Opening for Down was a fitting combination of two bands that helped shape the heavier side of the '90s, each approaching aggression from completely different directions. Where Down delivers thick, swampy Southern grooves, Helmet attacks with sharp edges, mechanical precision, and an almost industrial sense of rhythm.

Helmet doesn't need to reinvent the wheel or chase whatever is popular in heavy music today. They helped build the damn thing.
