21. Twenty-one. T W E N T Y - O N E.

Today, my best friend turned 21. Paige is brilliant, witty, passionate, empathetic, creative, kind, and beautiful. She is everything I wish I could have been at her age, and I am so damn proud of my girl.

Parenting is wild because just about the time you think you have your kid figured out, you realize that they have changed into a whole new version of themselves - baby, toddler, child, tween, teenager, young adult - and you have to figure them out all over again. But of all the stages and versions and iterations of who Paige was and is and will be, the version where she gets to be my friend, my partner in crime, my confidant, my movie and concert buddy, my ride or die, my companion in laughter and in tears - this one is my favorite.

We celebrated with a “framily” brunch at The Bloom Lounge in Plano where Paige got to order her first (legal) adult beverages! The restaurant was decorated with an Alice in Wonderland theme, all the servers were in costume, and the White Rabbit stopped by our table for a spot of tea with the birthday girl. So fun! The atmosphere was lovely and the food and drinks were delicious! Highly recommend!

Tonight, she is celebrating with friends as Barbie: Mermadia. My girl loves a good theme! I helped decorate and set up, but the idea and vision was all Paige.

Happy 21st birthday, baby girl. I love you more than the stars and the sun.

Chicago with Paige, Day 2! Breakfast (Elevenses) at @goddessandthebaker (yum!), walking several blocks in the rain, a really long Lyft ride to the airport to pick up the rental car (that was a hot mess - don’t ask!), another long drive in lots of traffic to Paige’s storage unit in Cicero, Tetris-ing all her stuff into the rental car (this was the whole reason we came), driving back to our hotel (on the Magnificent Mile) in the rain, a little nap, and then Chinatown! Whew! Tomorrow, we start driving back to DFW at 5:30 AM. Wish us luck!
