Strength. Discernment. Faith. Solidarity.

These are the words declared by the participants as we closed out our awe-inspiring trip, “From Compton to Jerusalem,” last night. Co-leading with my dear friends, Bishop Michael Fisher of Greater Zion Church in Compton, California, and Zioness Board Member and Stephen Wise Temple Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback, we spent 10 days traveling Israel alongside 24 remarkable and influential Black Christian faith, civic, political and cultural leaders, Black Jewish Americans and Black Jewish Israelis. We explored the Jewish state in all of its beauty, history, diversity, complexity and resilience.

This trip –– which we were originally calling the “Let There Be Light Unity Mission” –– has illuminated a path forward for all of us who believe in the possibility of collective liberation, even when the world seems determined to tear us apart. We know that path must be built, patiently but urgently, together. Shoulder to shoulder. Across faiths, across cultures, identities and geographies. We do this work not because it is easy, but because it is sacred; because the bonds we are forging—from Compton to Jerusalem—are the very antidote to the darkness threatening to consume our world.

It was a joy and a privilege to share this experience with our new friends-who-are-family. There is so much more to come.
