Yesterday, I spoke as Bob Ross in Times Square, New York City.

For a brief time, the biggest stage in the world became ours as I spoke about imagination, challenging the status quo, and the belief that everyone has an artist inside. Peope joined the fight to save Public Media and signed their name on the Quiet Riot Sheild as a petition and piece of collaborative art. The pen is mightier than the sword, the canvas is stronger than any shield.

It was so fun to meet with our amazing illustrator, John Jay Cabuay, as he added a personal touch to five copies of “You Are My Favorite Story” written by @shanimking and @njeremiduru . Each one got its own unique little drawing! After these are also signed by the authors, we’ll be placing them in select bookstores in NYC. Stay tuned to find out where you can grab one! And if you’re in Baltimore, MD - John is at ICON 13 right now (Hosted at the Maryland Institute College of Art) stop by his table and say hello!

Not every rejected children’s book manuscript is a bad book.
In fact, many wonderful stories never make it to the shelf, and it often has very little to do with the writing.

A publisher might already have something similar. It might not fit their upcoming list. The timing could be off. The production costs might be too high. Or it simply might not be the right fit for that publisher’s mission.

Rejection isn’t the opposite of quality.

More often than not, it’s about finding the right home.

That’s why I wanted to make this video. Publishing can feel mysterious from the outside, and I believe the more we pull back the curtain, the stronger our creative community becomes.
Whether you’re an author, illustrator, bookseller, librarian, teacher, parent or simply someone who believes children’s books matter. I hope this gives you a little more insight into the decisions that happen long before a book ever reaches a child’s hands.
The goal isn’t to find a publisher.
It’s to find the right publisher.
