What happens when you point a camera at the high holidays? A Rosh Hashana editorial.

ASERET: My whole life I’ve wrestled between loving and despising Judaism. One side of me hated the rules, commandments, the restriction, the insularity. But then there was another side of me that made it feel like home. Knowing that my grandparents fought every single day to keep this tradition alive. And their parents before them and so on for thousands of years.

It provides meaning, ancestry, continuity, and something that exists way beyond any accomplishments I accrue over my very ambitious lifetime. It almost signals to me: Zusha, you can make millions of dollars, shoot the highest fashion campaigns, produce your films, but ultimately this existed before you and it will always exist after you.

There’s a special humility in deeply entrenching yourself in that understanding. We all make choices. I choose to continue a tradition that countless generations before me fought extraordinarily hard to preserve, so that I can stand here in 2026 and create a Rosh Hashanah photo editorial in the heart of Manhattan.

Being Jewish doesn’t make me better or worse than anyone else. I understand being “chosen” not as superiority, but rather as responsibility. A responsibility to take whatever gifts, access, success or power I’m fortunate enough to have and use some of it to create more kindness, empathy and humanity in the world.

That is the Judaism I choose.
