POST-RACE RECOVERY AND CELEBRATION 🏅⠀
.⠀
We're pre-releasing parts from our upcoming "Ultimate Marathon Training Guide", authored by the top coaches from @rundoyen.⠀
.⠀
In this post, we share a sneak peak 👀 from what Coach Tara Welling (@tara_welling) has to say about how to celebrate and recover after your race.⠀
📷 pictured: various runners trained by RunDoyen Coaches⠀
------------------⠀
CROSSING THE FINISH LINE⠀
After crossing the finish line that you have been training months for, it may feel like an emotional experience and that’s totally normal — soak it in!⠀
.⠀
Not only does the marathon put a pounding on your body, but it’s a difficult mental challenge as well. You will have just pushed yourself to the limit over 26.2 miles, so take a few minutes to gather your feelings and enjoy the moment.⠀
.⠀
SHORTLY AFTER FINISH⠀
Once you’ve collected your thoughts, you’ll want to start thinking about recovery. Keep the following in mind:⠀
--> Try to avoid sitting or lying down ⠀
--> Keep your body moving if possible ⠀
--> Keep an eye out for post-race snacks and drinks⠀
.⠀
THE FOLLOWING WEEK⠀
If you’ve run a marathon in the past, you likely know that stairs will be your worst enemy the week after your race. If you can, try and focus on some active recovery the week after your race through some cross-training and/or stretching. The pool can be a great non-impact way to keep your blood flow going in order to enhance recovery. However, there is no need to rush back to running. Allow yourself a couple weeks before you even consider starting to train for another marathon.⠀

Pasadena Half at the Rosebowl 🌹, you were amazing! 🏃🏻‍♀️ Today I managed to shave about 4 minutes and change off of my last half marathon just 3 weeks ago so, needless to say, I am very happy! 🤗

Official time of 1:52:03 with 777 ft elevation gain! Those hills though... ⛰⛰ 🤦🏻‍♀️😆 So grateful to my running coach @ryan.p.vail and @rundoyen for helping me train better and smarter! .

Well, that was unexpected... .

2nd place age group/ 3rd place male/ 4th overall. 🧐😲. .

98% humidity is no joke. But a really enjoyable race today where things just fell into place. 🙏🏼 .

No expectations whatsoever. It was hot and very humid, and my back was still a bit achy after the warm up. We all took off very fast (as usual), and after the 1st mile I decided to not be stupid and hold back. But to my surprise, when I got to mile 3 nobody had passed me and the group ahead was still there, so it seemed like we all were struggling with the conditions. So I thought I would hold pace until mile 4. .

As soon as we got to mile 5 I decided to mount an attack since I was feeling ok-ish, and it was only then when I thought that podium was possible. 💪🏼 .

I put the pedal down and my heart sank when I passed 6.2 miles and the finishing line was nowhere in sight. I started feeling numb and but catching the fella in front of me. The course was obviously not measured and had us running longer 🤬 lol! .

I saw the line finally and kicked until I managed to overtake the runner in front within seconds. 🥳. .

It was only when I crossed the line that the announcer laughed and said the course was longer than the 10k to accommodate the folks in the half marathon. - Cheers mate, would’ve been nice to know that at the start! 😂. .

It then took about 1 hour to get the official results in but I’m really pleased ☺️. .

Can’t finish without giving a shout out to my partner in everything @palaciosannie for overcoming all those terrible conditions for double the distance, and still end up with age group 3rd place at the half marathon!! She’s a little tender right right now, but I’m super proud of her 😘. .

The journey continues... .

Proud post: Seeing @palaciosannie smash her PR at #chicagomarathon2019 by 33 minutes. ♥️. It was a pretty uneventful race for her which is what you want! She looked strong from the start and was still passing people by mile 25 when I caught a glimpse of her and was screaming like maniac.

What has made this most impressive is that she was training for that race for over a whole year. She had a full knee ligament reconstructed and had to pretty much learn to run again with correct form, THEN begin training for the marathon. She’s such a trooper!

All the hard work paid off and now on to the next one. I may decide to tag along then... 🙄🤔 .
