Once upon a time an average Aussie girl up and sold her average Aussie house and bought an ancient fairytale palazzo just a little north of Rome...

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In Australia, Kelly says she was the victim of “tall poppy syndrome” as she strived to grow taller and more beautiful, everyone wanted to chop her down.

This episode is for everyone who’s ever felt extra, or like they’re perhaps a little too much for their environment.

What was the fix for Kelly? Moving to one of the most beautiful places in the world: Italy. She explains how leaving town changed her – and her relationship with her ex-husband – in the latest episode about how geography affects our ability to be our best selves.

Are we truly different in certain places, or is that just what we tell ourselves?

After decades of feeling like she was in the wrong place, Kelly picked up and went to Italy. Today’s episode of the Love Letters podcast is a meditation on whether geography can change us.

Our guest, Kelly, is Australian. She says that in her hometown – and country – she always felt … limited. She believed her personality was too big for her community – and she says this is because many Australians are programmed to look down on people who want more from life. For Kelly, this perceived limitation was enough to make her move. It was a HUGE life change.

As you know, if you’re a woman who moves to Italy to reinvent yourself, you immediately become Diane Lane in “Under the Tuscan Sun” (2003). You get a perfect A-line dress, maybe a cool sunhat, meet a bunch of quirky locals, and find love. 🇮🇹

That’s not exactly how it happened for Kelly, of course. But she said the move to Italy did change her. It even changed her relationship with her ex-husband. Listen to how Kelly changed her stars on Love Letters, wherever you get your podcasts, or at the link in our bio.

We had the chance to step into a fairytale palazzo in a neighboring village here in Italy. Each room seemed to breathe the spirit of another time – antique furniture, beautiful details, and the soft glow of history transporting us to a different world. It’s easy to imagine how life once unfolded here. The beauty was truly breathtaking.

Thank you so much for opening your beautiful palazzo for us Kel💛💛 @palazzomenichelli

Lamarque 1830 France
Swipe left
in all his splendour having been drenched with rain for 3 days.
What a glorious show this climbing antique French rose puts on literally hundreds and hundreds of blooms.
The thorns are formidable like fish hooks and resist invasion by dogs, farm animals and humans making it an excellent rose to form a hedge with.
#lamarquerose

Reaching heights of 12-15’, Lamarque is a wonderfully fragrant, fully double, rosette with 4” blooms of pure white shading to lemon-yellow at the center. This Noisette was bred in 1830 in France and is a vigorous, repeat-blooming Climber or large Shrub. Set him up against a fence, wall, or large trellis, and watch him take off! Lamarque’s blooms are borne on long, cutting stems and emit a delightful, lemon-tea fragrance. This rose prefers warmer climates, so only plant in zones 7 or higher to guarantee success.
