Hi! You may have seen in my stories that I have been doing a project walking to my friends houses and taking social distance portraits (since pretty near the beginning of quarantine). TLDR I am still looking for friends in NYC who are interested in participating in this project, as things seem to be opening up a bit and I will be compiling the series into a zine when the project feels over.
If you live in NYC and we have met at least once, even in passing, and would like to be documented for this project please DM me so we can schedule something (hopefully)!
I have an awful lot to say about this project, but it was a lifeline for me. I was experiencing unbearable anxiety in the beginning of all this and was terrified that I couldn’t make it through this, esp wo relapse, as isolation and relentless anxiety etc are a recipe for disaster for most humans... but def for folks in recovery... who also deal with duel diagnosis mental health stuff. My housing situation was extremely “uncomfortable” (I have since moved), work got really insane... I felt like every second and every breath was crushing and I had no light, nothing to look forward to and felt too fucked up to make music or do anything creative. I was scared I wouldn’t find an outlet. I needed SOMETHING desperately.
I mostly take pictures of people. My work is about connection, always. I felt really compelled to make something but wasn’t sure how I could under the confines of social distancing. I decided that I would do this project and it hit all the right spots of what I needed: long walks, connection with friends, taking photos, having something to look forward to and work on... This project has helped me tremendously. I can’t even put it into words. It may have saved my life. I am happy that life has gotten more managable since that first month, and I think this project had a lot to do with it. I hit snags, cameras broke, I lost photos and footage... but I wouldn’t stop.
I may stop the project when “non-essential” businesses are open, or when it just feels right.
I have 14 rolls of film, and here is the first. The photos don’t have a filter, I’m using a special type of film that I thought was right.
