Hold MY Breath

medium format + 35mm film series with @pamelaliii
shot with light equipment from @gobanana.life
Special thank you to @harrisonhoude for trusting, believing in and housing me

directed, styled & shot by me
modeled by @pamelaliii

Pam & I had been planning a collaboration for almost a year at this point. We went to high school together but didn’t really know each other until college + post grad life. So many things came from this project together, mostly good because all of the bad became fuel for beauty and art. Pamela was concerned because she does not consider herself a creative person but if you take one look at her instagram grid, you know that is not true.

I knew she had the vision but maybe never had the space or the right type of support to experiment. I’ve already said this about 20x on previous posts but I am so grateful for Pamela and for our friendship. She is inspirational and one of the strongest, kindest people I’ve ever met. She constantly inspires me as a person and informs my creativity.

The last time we hung out we ordered sushi and stayed in to talk. I was going through a tough time (still am) and she just listened and created a safe, non-judgmental environment. I’ve always struggled with believing in unconditional love between non- parent/child relationships but it’s times like these where I’m starting to.

We took a lot of photos. Some of them showed at the dogearred showcase in LA 11.07.2025, some of these are new on this grid. There will be more coming.... (spoiler: we are collaborating again soon)

santa monica, august 2025

Last year I spent three months in Los Angeles after I finished my residency in Japan. I spontaneously rerouted my flight from New York to Los Angeles because I wasn’t ready to go home. My brother told me it sounded like I was running away. I agree with him now but then, I was determined to prove that my decision was not based on impulse but intuition.

I made a playlist for my 18 hour commute called “Running but not Away” and the plane became a liminal space. I listened to these 10 songs on repeat and wrote. I did nothing but write for 18 hours straight, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t even eat the snacks being provided.

By the time we landed I had a short novel. I spent a week editing and splitting the text into 7 chapters. The project snowballed. Before I knew it, over 10 different artists all located around the world agreed to create work in response to my writing.

On November 7th 2025, we showed together in a one night exhibition in Los Angeles. It was an unforgettable night filled with womanhood and love. I will forever be indebted to the people that helped me pull this off. The sheer scale and turnaround time was insane.

There is no “final product” because we are all evolving as artists, together and separately. I began my creative agency, @kaisle13 because of this project and my friends have continued to produce amazing work.

Its taken me a while to edit and prepare but I’m ready to share the documentation from last year. And I’m extremely eager to be apart of what’s next.

hold my breath

Medium format film series directed and shot by me with @pamelaliii

This was one of the scariest places I’ve ever shot at. Pam and I were on a beach in the pitch black next to giant rocks with the waves getting bigger and the tide coming in. I’ve never had to be been so in sync with a creative partner. In retrospect, I realize that the external chaos was mirroring the raw internals we were mutually experiencing. I’m beyond grateful for the grace and sisterhood Pamela has shown me.

pamela li — creative / marketing

pamela is from queens and harbors a deep appreciation for photography and videography both in front of and behind the camera, especially when it comes to creative direction. what she loves most isn’t the final shot, but more so the pursuit of it. you’ll find her out in the desert, inside a cave, or messing with the sunlight by her window, but half the fun (if not all of it) is in explaining the idea that brought her there in the first place.

pamela collaborated on a set of photographs featured at the dogearred exhibition inspired by an essay titled “hold my breath.” the photos were shot at high tide in pitch black at el matador beach in malibu on a roll of film with nothing but a small light panel plugged into a portable charger.

“pamela is genuine royalty in the people’s princess kind of way. the amount of pure elegance this woman possesses is beyond me. she handles any and all conflict with grace and true fairness because past everything, i know she just wants to understand and be understood, and i think everyone should be a bit more like pamela. i am one of those people that will digest anything she makes or decides to be a part of from now until forever.” — kyle
