On September 26, 1997, Soul Food arrived in theaters, bringing George Tillman Jr.’s story of family, tradition, love and conflict to the big screen. Nearly three decades later, the film remains closely tied to the sound of late-’90s Black pop culture.

But the music deserves its own retrospective.

The Soul Food: Music from the Soul Food Motion Picture soundtrack brought together Boyz II Men, BLACKstreet, Milestone, Total, Puff Daddy, Dru Hill, Tenderoni, Xscape, OutKast, Usher, Monica, Tony! Toni! Toné!, En Vogue and Earth, Wind & Fire across a 13-track collection of R&B and hip-hop.

The tracklist included:

Boyz II Men — “A Song for Mama”
BLACKstreet feat. Jay-Z — “Call Me”
Milestone — “I Care ’Bout You”
Total feat. Missy Elliott & Timbaland — “What About Us?”
Puff Daddy feat. Lil’ Kim — “Don’t Stop What You’re Doing”
Dru Hill — “We’re Not Making Love No More”
Tenderoni — “Baby I”
Xscape — “Let’s Do It Again”
OutKast feat. Cee-Lo — “In Due Time”
Usher & Monica — “Slow Jam”
Tony! Toni! Toné! — “Boys and Girls”
En Vogue — “You Are the Man”
Earth, Wind & Fire — “September”

And then there was Total’s “What About Us?”the Timbaland-produced Bad Boy/LaFace collaboration featuring Missy Elliott, released as the soundtrack’s lead single before the film hit theaters. The record reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

From A Song for Mama to September, the Soul Food soundtrack captured a particular moment when R&B, hip-hop and Black cinema were moving together.

29 years later, which song instantly takes you back to Soul Food?

I’ve been consistently working, now I have to give God His Glory and consistently post. May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us- yes, establish the work of our hands. Psalm 90:17
