we went to STUDIO Gallery for their auction this Sunday! a happy little accident from walking around the area and spotting an auction to benefit the SF-Marin Food Bank.

thanks to Northwestern’s BAI program and Prof. Pam Daniel’s for pushing us to immerse!

we were able to speak to Rosemary Mans, who gains inspiration from clips in vintage garden catalogues (slide 2). each of the elements, from the hummingbird to the flower and its leaves, were sourced from a different catalogue… such a cool use of surrounding resources recycled in an imaginative way. this has inspired us to consider household/everyday items for design mockups and as inspiration for creative art :)

For our final excursion, we visited the Modern Art wing at the @artinstitutechi in a tour guided by curator Alison Fisher. A piece that stood out to us in particular was the Chicago urban planning map from the early 20th century that showcased a birds-eye-view of the proposed city, despite the fact that most people at the time have not seen cities from such a height. Another piece that we really liked was the bench-like sculpture woven from paint and glue that demonstrated light intensity throughout the day. While the first piece demonstrated how art can influence design, the second was a great example of how design can influence art.

Finally, in the Past Forward exhibition, we saw a collection of artist Dan Friedman’s work throughout his career. Combining fine art, graphic design, and functional design, Friedman’s work showcases an innovative and eclectic style as demonstrated by some of his pieces like a colorful sea of plastic and paint to lamps and tables out of a science fiction movie. What was most memorable about Friedman’s work, however, was how much of his personal story he injected into each piece. Throughout the exhibition, it was clear that each artwork had a purpose—yet reflected an aspect of his life, like his battle with AIDS and his identity as a queer man.

As we conclude this last excursion, learning about the intersection between design and art got us thinking about how we ourselves can inject our own story both in the designs we make and the art we create. We’ve been inspired to see art and design as different—but intertwined—mediums through which our personal narratives and unique perspectives can be expressed and shared. As we move forward in our career as product designers and artists, our takeaways in this class challenge us to be more experimental and authentic, creating works that are not only visually compelling but also deeply meaningful. In doing so, we can make our creations become powerful tools for storytelling and self-expression.

Thank you so much again @pamfdaniels and @honeststructures for a wonderful class and thank you to all of our hosts for sharing stories and journeys with us!

Welcome to the prototype of Anna & Frederick Douglass pavilion. Thank you to the 2023 Chicago Architecture Biennial and @thefloatingmuseum for the trust in this vision and a considerable hug to Rachel Kaplan for advocating for support. Thanks to @kennedyking6301 for their tremendous efforts to assist in partnership.
This project took many hands and pivots to engineer @maxdavis3 and plan @sitedesigngroup and construct. My gratitude goes out to each and every soul that laid hands on it and minds to assure its erection. Please visit 5401 S Prairie site and share your ideas on programming for the A&F Pavilion. The structure was constructed and planted by Ortiz Design Build @ortizdesignbuild. They are amazing! Thanks to Photos by Scott Shigley

This week we visited @iacollaborative, a design consultancy based in Chicago. We heard from its Co-Founder and Co-CEO @kraemerdan about how the consultancy got started, as well as how the consultancy’s values of innovation and creativity are at the forefront of their operations. We were impressed by their process of human-centered design and how they integrate their client needs with intuitive design solutions. In particular, we enjoyed learning about their multidisciplinary approach, combining strategy, design, and research to create impactful user experiences for the products they design. Interacting with the design professionals at IA Collaborative provided us with valuable insights into the real-world applications of the concepts we’ve been exploring in this class so far. One of our takeaways from our conversation was the importance of empathy in design, and how deeply understanding user needs leads to more meaningful and successful products. The team’s passion for design thinking and problem-solving left us motivated to apply these principles in our own projects.

Overall, our visit to IA Collaborative was not just an educational experience, but a glimpse into the potential of design to transform ideas into tangible, impactful solutions. Thank you to the team again for having us!

This week for our design class led by @pamfdaniels and @honeststructures we visited the @hermes in the Making event at Union Station in Chicago! During our visit, we had the opportunity to watch Hermès artisans demonstrate their crafts ranging from glove-making, watch/jewelry-making, silk printing, saddle making, to ceramics painting. Not only were there many interactive experiences where we could learn more about Hermès’ history, culture, and artistry, but we also had the chance to talk to the artisans themselves and hear about the intricate processes behind each work. In particular, we were impressed by the amount of patience, craft, and effort that transforms a simple product into a genuine piece of art and thus gained an even greater appreciation for the amount of work and dedication put into ensuring quality craftsmanship. As such, this experience has inspired us to infuse the same level of thought, care, and passion into our own craftwork and designs, ensuring that our work resonates with a similar spirit of artistry and excellence.
