Honouring a visionary architect of Nigeria’s creative economy and academic ecosystem.

Renowned filmmaker and producer Femi Odugbemi has written a moving personal tribute remembering Prof. Albert Alos, pioneer Dean of the Lagos Business School (LBS) and founding Vice-Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University (PAU), who passed away at age 86.

Beyond his institutional achievements in higher education and engineering, Odugbemi remembers Prof. Alos as an early champion of Nigerian media, Nollywood, and the broader creative economy long before its global recognition.

Key Highlights:
• 6 Decades of Service: Arrived in Nigeria from Barcelona in 1967, contributing almost 60 years to the nation’s academic and institutional growth before being granted official Nigerian citizenship in 2022.
• Bridging Business & Nollywood: Opened the doors of LBS to support the Independent Television Producers Association of Nigeria (ITPAN), hosting the Lagos International Forum on Cinema, Motion Picture and Video in Africa in 2004.
• Building Institutions: Pioneered the vision behind PAU’s School of Media and Communication (SMC), embedding business acumen, infrastructure, and capacity-building into the creative sector.
• Legacy: Served on jury panels like the Afrinolly Short Film Competition and commissioned historic documentary projects to document Nigeria's growing intellectual institutions.

The most effective youth marketing does not treat young people as an audience. It gives them a role.

Street Souk’s University Tour was more than a travelling fashion activation. Across six Nigerian universities, it transformed campuses into temporary culture markets where students could discover brands, get creative and exhibit their street style.
But the deeper lesson is in the participation architecture behind it.
@streetsouk understands that Gen Z does not simply want culture presented to them. They want to remix it, wear it, debate it, document it and see their own identities reflected within it.

This is where many brands still get youth marketing wrong. Visibility may capture attention, but participation creates affinity. And when young people are given something meaningful to contribute to, community becomes a powerful route to conversion.
For relevance, brands need to be capable of building cultural environments young people genuinely want to identify with, shape and return to.

What does it really mean to belong to a community?

At the close of @deepindaba 2026, our Founder, Dr. Olubayo Adekanmbi - @bayo.adekanmbi , left Africa's AI community with a challenge that extends far beyond one conference:

Do not measure your place in an ecosystem only by what you receive from it. Measure it also by what becomes possible for others because you were part of it.

For a thriving African AI ecosystem, participation must ultimately translate into contribution: sharing knowledge, opening doors, mentoring emerging talent, creating opportunities and strengthening the communities that helped us grow.

Because the strength of an ecosystem is not simply the number of people within it. It is the value they continually create for one another.

As #DLI2026 ends, this is one reflection worth carrying forward.

Do not simply belong to the community. Help build a community where others can thrive.

Deep Learning Indaba 2026 at Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, was my first time attending the Indaba, and honestly, I am still trying to unpack the experience.
I had the opportunity to serve as a keynote speaker at the Quantum Machine Learning workshop, hosted by Quantum Africa, following the kind invitation from the amazing Yousra Farhani.

I spoke about Building the Nigerian Quantum Ecosystem: Current Stage, Challenges and the Way Forward — a subject I have been deeply passionate about because I believe Nigeria and Africa cannot afford to be spectators in the next generation of technology.
But beyond the speaking opportunity, what made this experience special for me was the people.
I met researchers, engineers, policymakers, founders, students and technology leaders from across Africa. From Egypt, Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Eswatini, Sudan, Madagascar, Chad, the Central African Republic, Congo and many more places.
And one thing became increasingly clear to me:
We are not as different as our borders sometimes make us believe.
We may have different cultures, languages and ways of approaching problems, but fundamentally, we are all trying to solve many of the same challenges and build a better future for our continent.

One of the most memorable parts of the conference was having the opportunity to speak with Akua Gyekye, Head of Government Affairs at Microsoft Africa. I shared some of the work I have been doing around technology policy advocacy in Nigeria and Africa and asked for her advice on how I could improve. Her encouragement to keep going and her belief that I am already doing meaningful work meant a lot to me.

I also had a conversation with Prof. Brando Okolo, Head of Science, Technology and Innovation at AUDA-NEPAD. Beyond the conversation around technology and Africa's future, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he had spent some time in my home state, Kano, during his service years.
These conversations reminded me of something I strongly believe:

Whatever you want to build in life, you need to learn from people who have walked the road before you.
There is still so much I am trying to unpack from this experience.
