Scouting isn’t simple.

Pandelis talks about the challenges behind identifying players.

One viewing isn’t enough.

He needs to see a player multiple times.

To understand their level.
Their consistency.
Their true ability.

He also highlights the difficulty of finding hidden gems.

Players not on big school radars.

Talent is there.

But it takes time to spot it.

Pandelis talks about how players should approach the decision.

What’s best for you?

Location matters.
Program success matters.
Academics matter.

Every school offers a different experience.

Recruitment is a process.

Pandelis breaks down how players are evaluated.

It starts with scouting.

Then an invitation.

Training sessions.
ID camps.
Time around the team.

They want to see more than ability.

How the player integrates.
How they communicate.
How they fit the environment.

Parents are part of the conversation too.

Scholarships rarely happen without this process.

Programs want to know exactly who they are bringing in.

The NCAA season is relentless.

Pandelis talks about the realities of the college schedule.

Away games.
Flights across states.
Short turnarounds.

The intensity builds quickly.

He explains that players have to understand and buy into the demands.

Because the schedule isn’t just physical.

It’s mentally exhausting too.

Coaching changes your perspective.

Pandelis talks about how stepping into coaching shifted his mentality.

Winning and losing feel different on the sideline.

The pressure is real.
The responsibility is bigger.

Coaching at the next level was harder than he expected.

Through it, he learned how to deal with losing.

Personally.
And as a team.

Playing at a high level gave him a foundation.

But he knew there was still a lot to learn.

New challenges.

Reading.
Learning the craft.

It’s never too early to be proactive.

Pandelis, drawing on his playing and coaching experience, talks about when players should start reaching out to coaches and universities.

Even at 15 or 16, building the foundation matters.

Introducing yourself.
Starting conversations.
Creating visibility.

Recruitment isn’t built overnight.

The earlier you lay the groundwork, the stronger your position becomes as you get older.

In Episode 88 of Next Level Talks, Sam sits down with Pandellis, Assistant Coach at Western Oregon, to break down what college coaches actually look for and why so many players misunderstand the process.

Pandellis played in Europe, moved to the U.S. at 19 to pursue college soccer, and is now recruiting at the NCAA Division II level. He shares what separates the players who get circled… from the ones who get crossed off.

This episode is about mentality, preparation, and understanding how recruiting really works from the coach’s side.

In this episode:

• What coaches notice in the first 20 minutes at a showcase
• Why body language matters more than skills sometimes
• Why highlight videos alone won’t get you recruited
• How follow-up emails actually move you up the list
• The biggest recruiting mistake young players make

If you want to play college soccer, this episode will help you focus on what truly matters.
