Curator Bruce Li @mill6chat talked me through Snuggle and Stitch: Childhood Textiles of Hong Kong showcasing local childhood textiles and toys from the 1930s to today. And then I got to meet the new indigo batch being nursed by the brilliant @paosinis and learned more about the natural dyes made from local Hong Kong plants. Wonderful to return to @themillsfabrica and see it thriving with creativity after so many years! #hongkongexhibitions #themillshk

Fermenting Feral Feminism
A workshop on brewing fermented pairing drinks and social fermentation. Thank you @kengkengchen and @eeelab__
For this incitation.

This workshop is open to everyone who is curious to learn about the living cultures within our foods and the benefits of microbial and enzymatic activity through more-than-human agency. The metabolic processes that take place in fermented foods have a positive impact on the human gut microbiome. These microbial mechanisms also tell stories about food politics, self-sufficiency, small-scale production, feminism and local food cultures. The ferments on the table are in constant flux, illustrating the symbiotic coexistence of plants, fungi, bacteria, animals, and humans. Decomposition and composition are translated onto the table through stains, spills, and the gradual transformation of the table setting throughout the event. A less-human centered mindset is transcribing the shift that our society is witnessing from, singular survival of the fittest towards a more sympoetical idea of relationalism and mutual care. Cooking is political. Fermentation is not only a trend, it is a movement!

Maya Minder

Maya Minder‘s Gasthaus lays in these current practices, an example of relational aesthetics in the age of the postdigital. Through the setting of a functional kitchen provided with all the necessary tools, it offers a local gathering point for people to cook and eat together while sharing ideas. What is more, it invites groups of artists and militants active in the field of nutrition and ecology - in particular those who built their praxis by developing new approaches to biotechnologies and DIY/DIWO methodologies - to discuss their visions and endeavours, using as a starting point and a mutual concept the process of fermentation. Similar to the concept of culture, which has its roots in an agricultural context and now encompasses concepts related to knowledge, values and civilisation, the concept of fermentation, describing metabolic processes such as the chemical transformation of sugar into acids, refers as well to social phenomenon of agitation and uprising.

「從室外到屋內，掃帚不僅是清掃拂去塵埃砂土的最佳工具，也是掃除厄運、趨吉避凶和傳統習俗串接的神奇道具。天然植物製成的掃帚一把可用上數年，濕了就晾乾、壞了就再綁一支。當因使用損耗、淘汰，置於野外也能化為塵土回歸大地，構成幾代人曾經有過的清掃風景。有時也因為太過平常，容易被人們忽略。

等到一回神後，發現隨著生態破壞與塑膠製品大量生產，這些天然產品漸漸失去了舞台，連擁有製作技術的師傅們也慢慢老去。曾經的日常風景，逐漸成為非日常的風景。」
《小島製帚》

由分享《小島製帚》的故事開始，與大家分享用本地植物就地取材，創造日常工具的意義。邀請到與自己志同道合，自稱「hands-on human for making/planting/gathering 」的前梅窩街坊 @paosinis Paola翻嚟梅窩，同參加者分享大嶼山植物纖維的特性。我哋將「種種」嘅空間，變成讓大家可以學像職人席地而坐，枱上面有半日限定之我哋呢幾年喺香港以及其他國家的手製掃把收藏迷你展示。

創作的素材係我哋喺大嶼山拾獲返嚟嘅植物，將植物攤開出嚟，整理平放在地蓆上，整個空間頓時充滿植物淡淡清香。係大嶼山都容易搵到如書中記載，適合做掃把嘅四種植物類別「木，禾，草，竹」，包括有喺鄰居工作室門口執到的棕櫚樹葉，乾燥處理過源自草原農場嘅禾草，以及 Paola 從港島東區帶來的松針；竹蓆上每一款的天然植物如同我同Paola嘅好友，笑住逐一同參加者介紹植物纖維嘅特性同由來。

參加者們需要活用 10 隻手指，加上赤腳用埋腳板撳住竹管先夠力綑線，腰板挺直用埋個Core——係㗎，做一把掃把係需要用哂全身嘅肌肉！完成後，大家笑住話活動非常充實，因為飢餓感衝到上頭頂，最後攞住自己製成品掃把時，睇得出大家嗰份滿足笑成一片。可以在「種種」同大家分享啟發自己的書、跳出書本、一齊認識梅窩身邊的植物、親身體驗手製掃帚的手藝，果然係開心到飛起的體驗～

「環境意識抬頭，與社會責任下的消費觀念興起後，這些同時乘載台灣歷史與環境意識的掃除器具，有機會以不同的形式與印象再次進入每個人的目光，不但可以再度成為現代人的清潔用品，也可以成為環境議題與地方生活故事的傳播道具。拿起這些掃帚，掃掃日常，也掃除生活中的煩惱，重新看待掃地這件乍看微不足道的事情，以及掃除與掃帚所蘊含的深意。」

熱鬧的活動後，再次透過文字讓自己沉澱，和大家分享《小島製帚》書中以上的這段話。不論最後有沒有親手造出一把掃把，都希望在大嶼山的這份體驗，能讓我們與當地的植物、與當下的生活重新連結。下次再次同這些植物擦身而過時，願我們看待大自然、身邊的花草樹木、以及日常工具的目光，從此變得不一樣。

Paola Sinisterra will study traditional craft communities in India, focusing on mud-resist dyeing traditions and its technical and artistic applications, to refine expertise in natural dye techniques and sustainable textile processes.
 
Sinisterra is a textile practitioner with over 15 years of experience in natural dyes. She has worked on a range of textile and cultural projects in both institutional (Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile) and hands-on learning environments (Hong Kong Baptist University, and non-profits like Learning Together, Current Plans).

On our 40th anniversary, we are so happy to introduce you to our 2026 ACC Hong Kong Fellows

This year, we will award 22 Fellows, chosen by our juries after much consideration, out of hundreds of applicants

Three of the 22 are ACC Hong Kong Special Anniversary Fellows, our way -- as a Grantee-centric organization -- of celebrating the 40th year of our office

We look forward to welcoming a Vietnamese curator, a Japanese visual artist, and a Taiwanese dancer and choreographer, in Hong Kong soon

Our "classic" ACC Hong Kong Fellows, who are from Hong Kong and Mainland China, were selected not only for their outstanding individual qualifications, but also for their proposals to better understand other societies, through cultural exchange — the heart of the ACC mission

Each Fellowship will take place from five weeks to six months, between August 2026 and December 2027. Depending on their proposals, Grantees will be going to Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, or the United States

More than just opportunities to travel, ACC Fellowships hope to give each Grantee opportunities to expand their networks, grow personally, and enhance their practices, while immersed in another culture

整一把開心到飛天嘅掃把 🧹

作為島民，用掃把打掃門前落葉，飲一口自製的茶，是我們的日常生活。「Escobas」(讀音同SCOBY相似)在西班牙文是掃把的意思，同時「SCOBY」亦是製作康普茶（Kombucha）最重要的酵母靈魂。特別邀請前梅窩街坊 Paola Sinisterra，她既是編織職人，亦是康普茶達人！Paola 將會為大家帶來double SCOBY的體驗：製作掃把之餘亦可以品嚐到自家製美味康普茶！

As islanders, sweeping fallen leaves from our doorsteps is a part of daily life. In Spanish, the word for broom is “Escoba,” which sounds similar to “SCOBY”—the living culture used to make Kombucha. In this workshop, we are delighted to invite former Mui Wo neighbor Paola Sinisterra, a guru of two worlds: broom making and Kombucha brewing!

Participants will experience “double SCOBYs” by learning both crafts in one gathering. You will explore different local fibers found on Lantau, learn two types of broom-making techniques to create your very own flying (and sweeping) accessory! This workshop suitable for beginners! Let’s turn the mundane task of sweeping into a meaningful ritual with a broom handmade by ourselves!

∙We’ll be serving fresh Kombucha for you to enjoy during the session, and Paola will be sharing her simple home-brewing tips.
∙ every participant will receive a small piece of Scoby to take home!
