Massive congratulations to our TRIO director and co-founder @papapearson whose short film MATES won the Best Short at CinefestOZ last week. CinefestOZ rounds out a great year for MATES which began back in 2025 with its premiere at the Sydney Film Festival as part of the Dendy Awards where it won Rory the Rouben Mamoulian award for Best Director, and also a shared EVENT cinemas Rising Talent Award for Best Screenwriting with Marcus Aldred-Traynor. @atmarcusat The film also won Best Lead Actor for its pitch perfect lead performance from Marcus Aldred-Traynor at CinefestOZ. After playing in major festivals in every state of Australia, MATES had its world premiere at the Dublin International film festival 2026 and received an honourable market pick mention at the Clermont-Ferrand film festival too. A huge achievement for its craft. Well done @matesfilm - 🏆 🌟and thanks to @cinefestoz @sydfilmfest @dublinfilmfestival @shortfilmmarket @adlfilmfest @stkildafilmfest @byronbayfilmfestival for the selections and @dendy.au @event_cinemas for the prizes.

Aside from watching great films at a festival, I love the people you run into along the way. Rory Parson, who I met with his short film Mate at the Heart of Gold Festival last year. Greer Simpkin and Rachel House, who I worked with on Kangaroo. Katie Milwright, who I haven’t seen in a decade, since we worked together when I lived in Melbourne. And Damon Herriman, this year’s Screen Legend Award recipient, who I’ve never worked with but have played Werewolf with several times. 😁 A huge congratulations also to Sweet Milk Lake, this year’s recipient of the $100K Film Prize. What a fantastic achievement. I really love CinefestOZ for exactly this. There’s something special about a festival that still feels intimate enough to keep running into people, have proper conversations, reconnect with people you haven’t seen in years and meet filmmakers you might work with somewhere down the track. For me, those encounters are as much a part of a film festival as sitting in a cinema watching the films. Thank you, CinefestOZ, for screening our short The Release twice. Seeing it with an audience and having it included amongst so much wonderful WA work meant a lot to me. I’m very grateful. 🥰🎬 #cinefestoz
