This week and next week Miget is Hawai’i. He was accepted as a fellow into the Te Rangi Hiroa Pacific Caretakes and Curators Program funded by the Mellon Foundation and organized by the Bishop Museum. This fellowship has been part of a multiyear effort funded by the Mellon to form a Pacific Pipeline to train Pacific Islander museum professionals, to support repatriation projects and to build networks across the Pacific between institutions.

This 9 month, low-residency fellowship is an amazing, prestigious honor. There are seven fellows total, four of whom are Chamoru or part-Chamoru, Miget, Nicole Delisle Duenas from the Guam Cultural Repository, Shannon Sasamoto and Papapi’ilani Flores. Each fellow is doing different projects either in the Hawaiian islands, Guam or the CNMI.

The program began this week with a three-day intensive training workshop at the Center for Oral History at the University of Hawai’i, Manoa. For the next week, Miget will be working with the other fellows at the Bishop Museum in the collection. For Miget and Nicole their focus is primarily preparing the return of the remaining 10,000 artifacts in the Hornbostel Collection. They have been and will be continuing to work with the Ethnology team, Library and Archives and Collections teams at the Bishop Museum to complete the final inventory for more than 4,000 slingstones, and then prepare them for packing and crating to arrive in Guam for an exhibit at the Guam Museum scheduled tentatively for October/November 2026.

Si Yu’os Ma’åse to Healoha Johnston the lead curator for the Pacific Pipeline for all that she has done not just in terms of making this fellowship, but also the many collaborations between the Bishop Museum and the Guam Museum that preceded it, possible.
