A challenging 55km ultra marathon on the pristine Paparoa Track

Trees growing on top of each other around here. She's dense bush here in the West! 😅

I grew up just down the road from the start line of the @paparoaultra.

It takes in 55km of the Paparoa Track. You go up from Smoke-ho through the beech forest, along the Moonlight tops, then down through the nīkaus into Punakaiki. It’s proper backcountry, with 3 aid stations at the huts.

This is a grassroots, community-run event, and there’s a kids’ run on the day too. Only 200 spots, so if you’ve been waiting for a reason to come and see the Coast, this is a good one.

Wooo, it's Spring which means we're coming up to outdoor market season! The monthly Barrytown Market commences on 19 September and the weekly Fox River Market is every Sunday from Labour weekend. The vibes are amazing - do pop in if you're in the area. Featuring local kai, music, arts & more 💃 🥖🫒

My dad was the quirkiest, most intelligent man you could imagine. He was intense, loving and brilliant. He could make a story about shitting his pants on the golf course sound like an epic written by Homer. He was fiercely loved

It’s been 11.5 years since cancer took him away.

I originally coped with alcohol, then I took up running, did couch to 5km and the following year did Queenstown half marathon. I ran to distract from the grief, which was incredibly overwhelming. I pretty much never ran consistently again after that race, until starting up in 2024 after my bariatric surgery.

This time round, I run not for distraction from pain but to sit in it and to be with my dad. I will have long conversations with him. We can celebrate my life together and all the things I am capable of because of the self belief he helped foster in me. I remember him being on the loud speaker at school sports days (he taught at my high school) and him making smart arse comments if I finished 2nd or 3rd in 1500m. I give a kick at the finish of any race I can, and I actually say out loud it’s for you dad. People who run with me know that I look out for black cats, fan tails and orange or purple flowers as signs dad is there.

I can imagine him embracing my new trail buddies and coming along to events. I’m running @paparoaultra because our childhood summer holidays were spent in Punakaiki camp ground and the memories of dad in that area are so precious , I just know there will be tears up on that trail

When I run I get to move the body that dad helped make, embrace the spirit of adventure in me that dad helped foster, and enjoy the natural world that dad so loved.

Good people, big days out, and plenty of kilometres through some pretty special country.
