Critique Group July 9th An incredibly inspiring night. I got to hear how Sam Hulsebus goes through his creative journey and how he is inspired by several processes. It was silent hearing how he is influenced to create, I know for myself I was taking notes in my mind to learn more. He has been painting for years, coming from an architect background. The most fascinating part of his process is how he will ignore and hide a painting for months if he feels he becomes too bothered with it. The discussion for the night was comforting and inspiring. Art is for everyone. Once art becomes a part of your life, it will become a need to explore, express, document life. Do art always. Question the need to do anything, and explore what becomes alive once you start to create. Take moments to savor why certain colors or shapes are calling to you. How do you feel before you create? How do you feel after? What an awesome experience, be sure to check out @samhulsebus has in store for the month!

Come see what I’ve been working on the past few weeks at the Petshop gallery in Benson! This Friday, March 7th at 6pm! It’s been a pleasure working on this and a big thanks to all of the artists who were brave enough to let me hold onto their sketchbook for a month 😎 “Sketchbooks are a common practice among artists across a multitude of mediums, and have been used to troubleshoot ideas for more developed works of art, practice their skills and work their creative muscles. Sketchbooks celebrate curiosity and discovery, and can serve as a learning tool for beginner artists learning to bring their creativity into reality. For some artists, sketchbooks are a diary. They symbolize a safe space to try new ways of artistic expression, or a careful discipline to refine drawing skills and expand artistic endurance. This low-expectation medium can foster great ideas and assist in the next finished and fully-developed work of art. Art enthusiasts and artists themselves tend to overlook the contents of their own sketchbooks, whereas friends and art supporters are curious about what’s inside. The purpose of this show is to bring the sketchbook practice into the public eye, in order to embrace the messy and disorganized, and show the work behind the final pieces of art. This show celebrates sketchbooks as a part of an artist’s studio practice, and brings the full scope of the creative process to light.”
