On March 28, 2022, an Airbus A330 from Frankfurt touched down at Southwest Florida International after just under 10 hours in the air. German travel site reisetopia reported the schedule: Fort Myers, three times a week.

The passengers already had a Naples. Italy's sits on one of the most painted bays on earth, a city of 905,050 under Vesuvius. The Florida version counted 19,115 residents in the 2020 census, and it was built on a dare. Two Kentuckians founded the town in 1886, and local histories say early promoters described its bay as surpassing the bay in Naples, Italy. The name stuck.

Europe took them up on it. Collier's tourism office counted 23,700 European visitors to Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades in January 2026. That's more than Canada sent that month, and more than the entire population of the City of Naples.

They come for a while. UK law guarantees workers at least 28 paid days off a year, and German law sets a floor of 24 working days. US federal law requires none. Collier's tourism office says European visitors typically stay between seven and 13 days.

They spend, too. In fiscal 2025, nearly 79,000 travelers from Britain and Germany visited Collier County, according to research firm Downs & St. Germain, and they spent more than $81 million directly. That's about $1,000 a head.

So in August, county commissioners approved two agencies abroad: DiaMonde in Stuttgart, covering Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Benelux, and OMMAC in London, covering Britain and Ireland. Gulfshore Business reported that June brought the first year-over-year rise in international visits since January 2025.

The founders picked a name that started an argument with Italy. Every winter, tens of thousands of Europeans fly over to settle it on the sand.

Heard “tax increase” in Collier County and thought, “Wait… am I paying more?” 👀

Here’s the distinction: this proposal would increase the tourist development tax on taxable hotel stays and short-term vacation rentals—typically paid by visitors.

🏠 Your property tax rate? Unchanged by this proposal. 🛍️ Your general sales tax rate? Unchanged. 🔑 Your annual lease? This tourist tax doesn’t apply.

The proposed change is from 5% to 6%. On a $200 taxable room charge, that means $2 more in tourist tax.

Across bookings countywide, Collier estimates approximately $10 million in additional annual revenue. Potential uses include beach restoration and protection, completion of Paradise Coast Sports Complex, tourism-related infrastructure, and promotion. 🌊

It’s proposed—not approved. The referendum is on November 3, 2026.
