Raised By The Radio (A Reintroduction)
Joy Oladokun
@joyoladokun

I was raised by the radio. And songs/albums like this. The experience of reading the liner notes while listening to every track in order has somewhat been replicated by Spotify lyric transcriptions and canvases. I kinda miss the smell the same way I like the smell of a new book even though I do consume and appreciate digital or audio versions. Ripping open the cellophane was always the worst and best part, annoying as hell and just as exhilarating. Laying back, enjoying a smoke, while reading the lyrics off your phone doesn’t quite hit the same as holding and flipping through the printed art that would sometimes leave inkstains on your fingers. I’m glad the younger generations are experimenting with bringing back these nostalgic formats. I like to think, as a DJ, that when you hear a track I share here, you are stoked to go discover more, the same way I used to be influenced by the radio DJs who inspired me. Shoutout Sharp QT-50 Portable Radio Boombox and Denver’s KS104 for getting me through my childhood and raising me right.

This album, Hope Is A Heavy Thing, released last month takes me back in the best ways. However it is that you like to do it, I would definitely suggest sitting back and taking in the whole album experience with this one.

Oh, and catch Joy Oladokun @paramountdenver here in Denver on Nov 4.
