UPDATE: The victim, a 32 year old female, died at the hospital overnight.

An adult pedestrian standing or walking in the right shoulder of Route 17 southbound in Paramus, was struck and critically injured by a hit and run driver late Monday afternoon, 10/19. The incident took place just south of the Route 4 overpass. The victim was rushed to Hackensack Medical Center’s main campus by a Paramus EMS ambulance. Route 17 southbound was completely closed near the accident scene for an extended period to facilitate a full accident investigation. Shortly after the horrific incident took place, an individual suspected of being the hit and run driver was taken into custody by Paramus PD within Garden State Plaza’s parking lot. The suspect’s vehicle, a white SUV towing a small U-Haul trailer, was impounded for further investigation. Paramus PD, Paramus EMS, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene. Fair Lawn PD, River Edge PD, and the NJDOT Emergency Response Team all assisted with traffic control.

The driver of a white colored, 4-door, Mercedes C300 and his/her adult passenger were captured by Paramus PD officers within minutes after the vehicle crashed on Winters Avenue, Paramus; this just after the Mercedes’ driver attempted to run over a Paramus PD police officer on Route 17 near the Garden State Plaza, early Friday afternoon, 09/18. Both suspects ran from the Mercedes after it jumped a curb, crossed over a sidewalk, and barrelled down an embankment before stopping just six (6) feet away from slamming into the Oradell Animal Hospital facility. Paramus PD units flooded the area and quickly apprehended both individuals. Police at the scene would not say whether the vehicle had been reported stolen, but were observed removing several shopping bags from the wrecked vehicle’s passenger compartment, which may have been indicative that the occupants were fleeing from a shoplifting incident. A flatbed tow truck winched the C300 up the embankment and away from the scene, the reported destination was Paramus PD’s headquarters. The was no word as to whether anyone was injured in the incident, nor whether any police or civilian vehicles were damaged.
