Soft-field Takeoff to the sunset 🌅✈️

A soft-field takeoff is a technique pilots use when taking off from surfaces like grass, dirt, or other soft or rough runways where you don’t want the nosewheel digging into the ground.

The goal is to get the weight off the nosewheel as quickly as possible, let the airplane lift off at a relatively low airspeed, and then stay just above the runway in “ground effect.” Being that close to the ground reduces aerodynamic drag and allows the airplane to accelerate more efficiently.

Once you’ve built up enough airspeed, you transition out of ground effect and into a normal climb.

Even though we practice them on paved runways, we fly the maneuver as if the runway were actually soft. Another maneuver checked off the list. 🛩️
