Baserunning technique is a skill that must be practiced. And it must be practiced at full speed. Every rep is a chance to solve a task - running from point A to point B in the least amount of time possible. Running below full speed engrains routes that can’t be maintained in competition.

Hitting the front of the bag at first base is overrated if it causes the runner to break stride - the magnitude of deceleration to complete the task becomes greater, and it takes more time. This must be practiced at full speed.

Rounding bases on too tight of a curve creates a big moment of deceleration, or a suboptimal route. Running anything less than full speed creates the illusion of task completion in a controlled environment.

Full or near-full rest is needed after each rep. Too many base running sessions turn into mindless, non-specific conditioning sessions that don’t achieve their actual goal.

And it just so happens to be the perfect “sport specific” sprint stimulus.
