Community - A blog I wrote for @epiphanysuwanee

How important is community? Last week Gina and I spent nearly a week with our son and 13 of his friends on a cruise ship. I am guessing he will see each of these classmates again in his lifetime, but if for some reason he doesn’t, they were able to take a pretty cool trip together that created memories that I hope will last a lifetime.

How important is community? This trip didn’t plan itself. Gina was on the phone MANY times planning a trip of this magnitude, along with countless emails and texts to parents, and at times I’m pretty sure Gina either wondered if it was worth it or was thinking, “These kids better love this trip!”

How important is community?

12 of the guys on the cruise just graduated from high school, one is in college and one just finished his junior year. On the drive home I asked the youngest guy how he was going to make it next year with all of these guys moving on to college. He replied, “I’ll probably cry myself to sleep everynight.” I think he was joking.

How important is community?

I know church isn’t for everyone and the church is far from perfect, but I love the community that is berthed out of a church, and in a time when I worry many don’t have a community and long for one, the church is a place where this can be found.

Thankfully our son won’t ever graduate from high school again because I don’t know if Gina has it in her to plan another trip like this, and as much of a pain as it was, looking back I think we both agree it was worth it. We may not have loved being on the lowest deck, in an inside room (yes, that means no window) but seeing these guys connect and the memories that were made, it was worth it. Because that’s how important community is.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Chris
