EP 208 | MIKE SMITH - WHAT MAKES A GREAT COACH?

What separates a good coach from a great one?

I had the absolute privilege of chatting with Mike Smith, former NAU coach and now leading Nike Swoosh TC, coaching some of the world’s best distance runners.

We chatted about Parker Wolfe, Ethan Strand and Nico Young, their transition into professional running, building a great training culture and finding an edge through creativity.

But what I enjoyed most was hearing Mike talk about the human side of coaching.

The importance of listening. Understanding an athlete’s fears. Building trust. Having honest conversations. And helping people become more than just better runners.

We also got into what Pat Henner, Jack Daniels and Chris Miltenberg have taught him about humility, friendship and coaching with genuine care.

Mike’s a pretty special thinker, but what stood out most was how generous, thoughtful and genuine he was with every answer.

I came away from this one feeling pretty inspired and with plenty to reflect on in my own coaching.

A really valuable listen for any runner, coach or anyone interested in helping people get the best out of themselves.

Huge thanks to Mike for his time and to Chris Miltenberg for making the conversation possible.

Run hard, risk heartbreak…Chicago you were incredible💔🏃‍♀️

I am so grateful @heartbreak.run and @nikerunning gave me the opportunity to be surrounded by such inspiring individuals all weekend. The hard work and dedication that goes into marathon training makes me want to be a better athlete and share my journey even more as I embark on my professional career. These experiences are truly what makes this sport so special and the people who you share it with make it even better.

CHICAGO. WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.

Some cities you race in. Others become part of your story.

Chicago will always hold a special place in my heart. Ten years ago, I stepped onto these streets for my very first marathon, not knowing how much this distance would challenge me, humble me, and change my life.

In 2016, I learned the hard way what 26.2 miles can do to you. A hamstring cramp sent me to the medical tent, where I spent 25 minutes getting worked on before jumping back into the race. I crossed that finish line in 3:00:07.

I could have called it a day. But I didn’t.

That day taught me something I’ve carried into every marathon since: the marathon doesn’t care who you are, what you’ve accomplished, or how prepared you think you are. You have to earn every mile.

Since then, I’ve returned to Chicago stronger, wiser, and hungrier. I’ve experienced breakthroughs, setbacks, unforgettable moments, and lessons that go far beyond running.

Chicago has also been my lowest overall finishing placement among the World Marathon Majors I’ve raced. There’s something about these streets that brings out the competitor in me.

But this journey has never been just about the clock.

It’s about the years nobody sees. The early mornings. The lonely miles. The sacrifices. The setbacks. The people who’ve believed in me. And that relentless part of me that refuses to stop chasing what I know I’m capable of.

Tomorrow marks my fifth Chicago Marathon, ten years after my first.

Different chapter. Same hunger.

I don’t know exactly what these 26.2 miles have waiting for me, but I know what I’ve put into getting here.

Chicago, you were where my marathon story began. And I’m not finished writing it.

One more opportunity. One more battle. One more chance to see what I’m made of.

2026. LET’S WRITE ANOTHER CHAPTER. 🐺🔥

HEARTBREAKPALOOZA 💔

Powered by @nikerunning, thousands of runners came together for one final run before Chicago 26.2, and the only way to send them off was with a party.

From the Salt Shed to the festival at Oz Park, the energy was unmatched. 10 Chicago 2027 bibs were raffled off to close out the morning.

Thank you to everyone who pulled up 🫶
