건축가 Alex Josephson을 비롯한 디자이너들이 이끄는 PARTISANS는 디지털 기술과 실험적인 제작 방식을 결합해 유기적인 형태와 혁신적인 구조를 구현하며 국제적인 주목을 받아왔습니다.

대표적인 프로젝트로는 캐나다 온타리오의 자연경관과 조화를 이루는 Grotto Sauna, 유려한 목재 곡선으로 이루어진 토론토의 Bar Raval 등이 있으며, 건축부터 인테리어, 가구와 조명에 이르기까지 폭넓은 디자인 영역에서 활동하고 있습니다.

이러한 실험 정신을 가장 잘 보여주는 작품 중 하나가 스페인 조명 브랜드 Parachilna와 함께 선보인 ‘Gweilo’ 컬렉션입니다.

Gweilo는 빛을 담는 조명 기구가 아닌, 빛 자체를 하나의 조각으로 만들고자 하는 질문에서 출발했습니다.
⠀
투명한 아크릴 시트에 열을 가해 유연하게 만든 뒤, 장인의 손으로 구부리고 접어 불규칙한 곡선을 완성합니다. 이후 가장자리에 배치된 LED의 빛이 아크릴 표면을 따라 퍼지며, 마치 빛이 공중에 떠 있거나 부드러운 천처럼 흘러내리는 듯한 장면을 만들어냅니다.

빛이 고체처럼 형태를 갖는다는 역설적인 발상은 조형성과 제작 기술을 인정받아 Gweilo는 2015년 LAMP Award를 수상했으며, 2016년에는 국제적인 건축·디자인 어워드인 AZ Awards에서 Best Lighting Installation 부문을 수상했습니다.

특히 AZ Awards에서는 기존 조명의 구조적 한계를 벗어나 빛을 자유롭게 구부리고 조형할 수 있다는 혁신적인 접근으로 높은 평가를 받았습니다.

이후 2017년 토론토 Interior Design Show에서는 Gweilo의 제작 과정을 현장에서 직접 선보이며, 산업적인 기술과 장인의 수작업이 결합된 독특한 제작 방식을 소개했습니다.

정형화된 구조보다 예측할 수 없는 곡선, 산업적인 정밀함과 손으로 완성하는 우연성의 공존.

PARTISANS가 디자인한 Gweilo는 조명을 단순히 공간을 밝히는 도구가 아닌, 빛과 형태가 함께 존재하는 하나의 조각적 오브제로 바라보게 합니다.

Gweilo 컬렉션은 테이블 조명인 Song, 플로어 조명인 Han과 Qin, 펜던트 조명인 Zhou까지 총 네 가지 디자인으로 전개됩니다.

각각의 디자인은 크기와 비례, 곡선의 흐름이 서로 다르며, 설치 방식에 따라 공간 속에서 독립적인 조각이 되기도 하고 공중에 떠 있는 빛의 형태로 존재하기도 합니다.

투명한 아크릴 본체에 골드와 실버 두 가지 알루미늄 마감을 선택할 수 있으며, 빛이 꺼진 상태에서는 투명한 조각처럼, 빛이 켜지면 유기적인 곡선이 선명하게 드러나는 것이 특징입니다.

특히 모든 아크릴 형태는 정해진 몰드 없이 수작업으로 완성되기 때문에 같은 모델이라도 미세하게 다른 곡선과 표정을 지닙니다. 이러한 차이는 Gweilo를 단순한 조명 제품이 아닌, 각각의 개성을 가진 조각적 오브제로 완성합니다.

The best design talks don’t give you a style to copy - they give you better questions 🤭

That’s what I’m taking from the Manila Interior Design Summit 2026 Symposium.

Not another aesthetic to chase, but a wider lens for how I want to practice interior design !!!

How deeply am I understanding the people, places, materials, culture, and stories I’m designing with?

How open am I to collaboration, experimentation, and ideas that challenge me?

And how do I keep evolving without losing what makes the work feel like mine?

That’s the kind of learning I want more of: the kind that changes how you see design, space, people, and possibility.

Grateful to @partisansarchitecture @alexanderjosephson , Takae Ito, Satoshi Ohashi @zha.world @zahahadiddesign , @cazarch and @defitwijaya for expanding the way I think about design, and to @piid.official for creating the space for these conversations.

We adore a L A M P success story. This one is called Gweilo.

It arrived in 2015 as a submitted prototype by Alex Josephson (@alexanderjosephson) of PARTISANS (@partisansarchitecture) and won Best Professional Design. National accolades followed, including the AZ Award for Best Lighting Installation in 2016. Today Gweilo is a diverse product line carried by the ever-dynamic @parachilna.

Here it is, spotted last year on a visit to the stellar showroom of @diezcompany in Mexico City. Since 2004, Diez Company has been the bridge between Mexico and the world’s most prestigious decorative lighting brands. A full circle moment, because:

L A M P will present a selection of this year’s entries at Alcova Mexico City during Art Week, February 2027. Every entry received by October 31 is eligible, and the selection will be made by 2026 L A M P jurors Valentina Ciuffi and Joseph Grima, founders of Alcova. L A M P at Alcova is presented by Diez Company.

Alcova transforms abandoned and historical buildings into immersive exhibitions of emerging talent and experimental design. Milano since 2018, Miami since 2023, and Mexico City debuting February 2027.

And the 2026 panel? Omer Arbel of Bocci and Lukas Peet of A-N-D, both on the 2015 jury that awarded Gweilo, are back. They are joined by Chiara Ripalti of IKEA, plus Valentina and Joseph.

Last year, I was listening from the audience 🥺 this year, I got to ask the questions…

And I think that shift says a lot about becoming an interior designer.

You’re not just here to absorb what everyone else is doing.

You’re allowed to ask better questions.

Build your own design point of view.

Learn from other designers without making your work look like theirs.

That’s one of my biggest takeaways from @piid.official MIDS 2026: exposure should not make your voice smaller.

It should help you see more, question more, and get clearer about the kind of designer you want to become !!!

So grateful for these insights around memorable spaces, design identity, human-centered design, materiality, memory, experience, and storytelling in interiors.

Dinner with the queen of Toronto’s restaurant scene. 👑

Last week we joined Janet Zuccarini at Gusto 501, where the room is almost as memorable as the food. An old auto shop reimagined by PARTISANS into one of the most beautiful spaces in the city.

The 2026 MICHELIN Guide Toronto & Region was just announced, so it felt like the right week to sit down with a woman who has helped shape Toronto’s dining for nearly three decades.

Come for date night. Stay for the campanelle con gamberi. And notice the staff, because Janet’s not so secret sauce is her people. ✨

A steel girder supporting a 1:1 cantilever to accommodate a 24-meter sliding glass wall overlooking the Niagara Escarpment.

Fold House is a guest residence and pool pavilion designed to flow with the hillside topography of Southern Ontario’s Niagara Escarpment. The exposed stair functions as a unified structural diaphragm. Three steel plate stringers interlock with 12 transverse steel ribs that mirror the roof curve. At grade, an angled HSS stub anchors the lowest steps to create a floating reveal, keeping the base physically detached from the main run. The top of the stair anchors directly into a rigid concrete wall in the natatorium, while the lower fold rests on a concealed four-branch HSS fork that converges into a single exposed pipe column below.

To achieve the 24-meter sliding glass wall within the indoor natatorium, a heavy W-section runs parallel with the glass elevation to support a 1:1 roof cantilever that controls the deflections on top of the opening. In tandem, the cantilever ensures the glazing wall remains column-free, leaving the view completely unobstructed.

ALUMINATION is a sculptural chair and table series that turns flat sheets of aluminum into rigid, lightweight volumes through robotic incremental forming. Deep, fluid concavities contrast with strikingly thin edges, while visible tool-path tracks give each metallic surface its texture.
