A worker-owned design practice in New York, NY
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We Live Here is a public research and dialogue platform that brings a local lens to the national housing crisis. Focused on living affordability and security in New London, CT, it explores the historical events and systems behind widespread affordability struggles, helping build a deeper shared understanding of how we got here. The project is supported by a Mellon Foundation grant to Connecticut College and carried out in collaboration with The Housing Collective through the Center for Housing Opportunity Eastern Connecticut (CHO-EC). Who else but Hell Gate could sell out Littlefield with a 90-minute powerpoint on the NYC Judicial System??? Specifically: how these judges get to be judges?? And which ones suck the most ass?? And make it not only fascinating but also lol funny???? Nobody else could do that, is the answer. Nobody but Max, Katie, Jessy, Nick, Adlan, and the rest of the worker-owner crew. And special guest/comrade Allie Conti, whose insights into what actually a “court reporter” does made the whole system sound even more insane than I imagined. A great night as always, subscribe today to get the whole scoop with the team’s brand new package, Courts of Contempt, made with Partners and Partners and Type Investigations, plus insider access to other rad events (looking at you, Rockaway concert this summer).

Introducing Courts of Contempt—Hell Gate @hellgateny and Type Investigations' new interactive investigation into the machinations of New York's broken judicial system. Courts of Contempt is an in-depth inquiry into how people become judges in New York City; the scandalous nature of the county political parties that often subvert democracy to get their favorite attorneys on the bench; and the reform efforts to try to finally fix the city’s judiciary. Also included in Courts of Contempt: profiles of nine judges who embody aspects of this broken system. These judges are all far from perfect, although their faults are not entirely their fault—this is the result of a system where corruption runs rampant and oversight is insufficient, and where efforts at reform have run up against the shores of cronyism. You’ll read about judges appointed or elected to serve on one court, only to be shifted to another, without any transparency; judges who flout the spirit and intent of the state’s 2019 bail reforms; former prosecutors with reversed convictions and reduced sentences; and plenty of bad behavior and ignorance of the law—with regular New Yorkers paying the price. Hell Gate and Type Investigations began the research for Courts of Contempt in early 2025, with the goal of shedding some much-needed light on an opaque system—the broken and scandal-plagued process by which New York City’s judges are selected. During the course of the past year, we sat in courtrooms across the city; spoke with more than 50 attorneys who practice in New York City’s courts; combed through hundreds of pages of court transcripts; interviewed more than a dozen criminal justice professors, judicial reform advocates, and good government experts; and staked out various political party events and meetings. We’re extremely grateful to the people who spoke with us and shared their stories, insights, and experiences. 🔗Click the link in bio to read the full investigation. Two big election nights, two livestreams with @hellgateny. The first was so exhilarating and chaotic! But leading up to November, I knew we had room to grow. I thought about our “commercial breaks”—the bits of downtime. How could we unify and better-define the overall voice of the show? Could the moments when a reporter wasn’t on screen still *feel like Hell Gate*? I immediately thought about shooting a bunch of Local Commercials. In the end I only made one: a 45-second promo for @scoboco’s $20 Dinner column. It was quick, scrappy, and so much fun, and I’m so lucky that my friend Scott is the most game-for-anything man in NYC. More Scott Lynch videos in the future? Sure hope so!!! The next thing I knew I wanted to make were essentially shameless ripoffs of the “Bumps” that would play during blocks of @adultswim circa 2007. These little snippets of music-and-photos are hard to describe, but…if you know, you know. This is where @zogotsoul really came through. All the music heard on these “We’ll be right back” clips come from him, and we used Zo’s original beats ALL OVER the stream. It wouldn’t have been the same without his generosity. Finally, the intro. I wanted this general election stream to start with an “Oh Sh*t!!” moment—a proper News Team montage! We are not here to mess around!! With crucial help from @pnickcurran, it came together (literally five minutes before showtime!) Our real star here was Rich Lamb, a 40-year veteran of WCBS News radio. Rich’s voiceover was incredible, you gotta hear it for yourself! So yeah, this is my long and indulgent breakdown of the HG stream’s interstitial content. When we were live, I operated our three cameras and kept our hosts on their toes playing human tally light, but these in-between videos were my real contribution to the show. It was gratifying to get to stretch out creatively, but I was just one part of a giant group. Thank you again to Scott, Zo, Nick, and Rich—not to mention the tireless work of @romkeh, @bloombradley, @thesmackboi, @brasgood, @rickpaulas, @lulu___johnson, and all of @partnerandpartners. Subscribe to Hell Gate. Hope to go live again soon ❤️
