🇳🇬The Yoruba word Iyál'ojà, also known as Iyalode, literally translates to "Mother of the Market."

As a result, historically speaking, the Iyalode played a significant role in Nigeria's pre- and post-colonial politics and economy in addition to being a voice for women in the council.

An Iyalode, known in Yoruba mythology as Oba Obirin or "King of the Women," is typically taken into account by the council of high chiefs when making decisions.

One of Yorubaland's wealthiest individuals, Madam Tinubu (Iyalode of the 19th century), had a significant role in determining who would rule both Lagos, where she married an oba (king), and Egbaland, where she supported her fellow Egbas in battle.

An Iyaloja is usually democratically chosen by her constituents (and is thereafter confirmed by the oba (king) ) or single-handedly chosen by the oba himself.
