Almost the entire peninsula was taken...

In 722, a Visigothic nobleman named Pelayo refused to submit and held a cave in the mountains of Asturias with a few hundred men. He destroyed the army sent to kill him, and founded the Kingdom of Asturias. It was the first Christian victory since the invasion.

What followed took 770 years. Kingdom by kingdom, city by city, the Christian north pushed south. Toledo in 1085. Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212. Córdoba in 1236. Seville in 1248.

In 1492, Granada surrendered, and the Reconquista was over.

Pelayo’s tomb still stands in that cave. The inscription reads: “Here lies the holy king Don Pelayo, who in this miraculous cave began the restoration of Spain.”

THE RECONQUISTA

WHEN IBERIA ROSE AGAIN

In 711 AD, armies from North Africa crossed into Iberia and defeated the Visigothic king Roderic at the Battle of Guadalete. In only a few years, most of Iberia fell under Muslim rule. But the story did not end there. In the northern mountains, resistance began.

Around 718–722 AD, Pelagius of Asturias led a small Christian force at the Battle of Covadonga, often remembered as the beginning of the Reconquista, the long struggle to reclaim Iberia. From that moment forward, Christian kingdoms slowly pushed south.

The Kingdom of Asturias became the foundation, later growing into the Kingdoms of León and Castile. To the east, the Kingdom of Aragon expanded along the Mediterranean. And to the west, the County that became Portugal rose under leaders such as Afonso I of Portugal, who secured independence in 1139 after victories against Muslim forces.

One of the greatest turning points came in 1212, at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, where kings Alfonso VIII of Castile, Sancho VII of Navarre, and Peter II of Aragon united their armies and broke the power of the Almohad forces. This victory opened the path for further Christian advances across Iberia.

In the following centuries, Christian forces captured major cities. Toledo fell in 1085, Cordoba in 1236, and Seville in 1248, under the leadership of kings like Ferdinand III of Castile.

The final chapter came in 1492, when Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile completed the Reconquista with the capture of Granada, ending centuries of conflict and marking the full restoration of Christian rule across Iberia.

From the mountains of Asturias to the plains of Castile and the rising kingdom of Portugal, the Reconquista became one of the longest struggles in European history, lasting nearly 800 years. Spain and Portugal emerged from that struggle as powerful Christian kingdoms, shaping the future of Iberia and beyond.

🇪🇸✝️🇵🇹 Today is the anniversary of one of the greatest Christian military victories against Muslims in history.

On July 16, 1212, three Christian kingdoms united into a single crusader army and crushed the outnumbering Muslim armies of the Almohad Caliphate at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa.

The Christian forces were led by King Alfonso VIII of Castile, King Sancho VII of Navarre, and King Peter II of Aragon, all blessed by Pope Innocent III.

They led a 14,000-strong Christian army in a crusade against a jihad of 30,000 Muslim warriors led by Caliph Muhammad al-Nasir.

They were joined by the Knights Templar, the Knights Hospitaler, the Order of Calatrava, the Order of Santiago and the Order of Évora.

Despite being outnumbered 2 to 1, the Christian forces dealt a crushing defeat to the Muslim enemy, eliminating 20,000 of them while losing only 2,000.

The Christian victory permanently shattered Muslim rule in the Iberian peninsula, breaking up the unified Almohad Caliphate into tiny principalities and turning the tide of the Reconquista.

In the climactic scene of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, after a fierce battle between Blackbeard’s crew and Barbossa’s forces at the Fountain of Youth—where Barbossa mortally wounds Blackbeard—a large contingent of Spanish soldiers, led by the enigmatic Spaniard, suddenly marches in. Outnumbering the exhausted pirates and privateers, they swiftly seize the two sacred chalices, toss them into a deep pool, and proceed to demolish the ancient structures surrounding the Fountain, viewing its life-extending powers as a blasphemous abomination against God. As the temple crumbles, the Spaniard declares “Thy will be done,” marking the permanent destruction of the legendary spring.
