Across various world traditions, headdresses have never been merely decorative adornments. They protected against the ‘evil eye’ and negative forces, functioning as a symbolic language: shape, color, fabric, and patterns revealed a person’s homeland, marital status, and social position.

In Belarusian culture, the bonnet (chapiec) was an obligatory part of a married woman’s costume. It completely covered her hair, distinguishing her from unmarried maidens who wore their hair exposed.

Hair was viewed as a source of magical power, closely linked to vitality and fertility. It was therefore treated with great care in rites — combed, braided, or burned after cutting to preserve the sacred bond between body and ancestral roots. While loose, open hair was tied to an uncertain, liminal state, covering it represented an entry into the cosmic and social order.

Галаўныя ўборы ў розных традыцыях розных народаў заўжды былі не проста ўпрыгожваннем. Яны абаранялі ад «злога вока» і шкодных сілаў, з’яўляліся часткаю знакавай сістэмы, якую можна было прачытаць: форма, колер, матэр’ял, арнамент распавядалі пра родныя мясціны, сямейны статус, сацыяльнае становішча.

У беларускай традыцыі чапец быў абавязковым элементам касцюма замужняй жанчыны: ён цалкам закрываў валасы і адрозніваў яе ад дзяўчыны, валасы якой былі адкрытыя.

Валасы лічыліся крыніцаю магічнай сілы: яны звязваліся з урадлівасцю і энергіяй. Менавіта таму часта яны былі аб’ектам асаблівай увагі ў абрадах — іх расчэсвалі, запляталі, спальвалі пасля стрыжкі, каб не парушыць сувязь з целам і родам. Адкрытыя валасы асацыяваліся з «пераходным», нявызначаным станам, — тады як іх закрыццё сімвалізавала ўключанасць у касмічны і сацыяльны парадак.

Project [РУНЬ]* by Masha Maroz emerges from her long-term ethnosemiotic research into Belarusian archaism and deconstructs mythopoetic codes and symbols, reimagining them for a contemporary cultural landscape. It manifests as a capsule collection of women’s clothing based on ethnic costumes and rituals of the artist’s ancestral land, Palessie - the region of ancient swamps and relict forests, where nature itself has helped to preserve the traditions, unlocking their potential for reinterpretation and everyday integration.

The project’s presentation will unfold in the form of a performance that refers to the cosmogonic myths of the First Event. Drawing on the universal form of the round dance [karahod] - a circle of rebirth and healing - it reflects on the motion of life beyond linear time and reveals creation as a perpetual unfolding, a cosmic rhythm enacted in the “eternal now.”

The primordial soundscape of the performance will be created by SPIEVY @spievy , a Belarusian female choir known for its distinctive approach to reinterpreting traditional songs, and musician Victoryja Bahdanovich @bahdanovichh .

The presentation is supported by Fundacja Kraina @fundacjakraina as part of the artist residency program “Razem” and will take place at Kamien. Pawilon Edukacyjny @kamien_pawilon_edukacyjny (Wybrzeże Puckie 1, Warszawa) on August 23, 19:00.

Мне падабаецца думка як старыя фатаграфіі знаходзяць новае жыццё дзякуючы інтэрнэту.

На гэтых здымках вяселле Валянціны Усовіч, вёска Першамайск Салігорскага раёна, 1967 год. Стужка з імі праляжала ў кладоўцы ў вёсцы больш за паўстагоддзя. Але зараз яна аблічбавана, выкладзена ў вольны доступ і любы жадаючы можа даведацца што там адбывалася. Пры тым, што большасці з людзей на кадрах ужо няма ў жывых, у тым ліку жаніха і нявесты.

Што будзе адбывацца з гэтай ці з вашымі фатаграфіямі, выкладзенымі ў інтэрнэт - гэта насамрэч вялікае пытанне. Вядома, яны могуць быць выдаленыя з сервераў у выніку «Вялікай Памылкі 2147-го года», але з іншага боку нельга выключаць і таго, што вашыя пра-пра-пра-праўнукі будуць разглядаць чым сілкаваліся іх продкі і дзівіцца як мы наогул выжывалі пры такім нізкім узроўні медыцыны, калі нават дэменцыю і СМА не маглі вылечыць!

Адкуль мы ведаем як жылі людзі ў 17 стагоддзі? З кніг, з карцін. Як людзі будучыні даведаюцца як мы жылі? З нашых пастоў у сацсетках. Упэўнены, што будзе нават такая галіна ведаў, якая падобна археалогіі будзе капацца ў інфармацыйнай бурбалцы, даследуючы грамадства ў нейкі перыяд.

Таму заклікаю вас пакідаць сваім нашчадкам якія-небудзь «пасхалкі», можа нехта гадоў праз 200 пасмяецца з вашага жарту 😅 такія вось дзіўныя думкі

У неймавернай кампаніі разам з Аняю Карпенка @hannaharp , Ігарам Бабковым і Валерам Марозам - маім дарагім бацькам - мы выявілі, сабралі і перанітавалі сэнсы, якія, як нам хочацца верыць, хоць і на імгненне, але здольныя асвятліць шлях у часы густога змроку.
