POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Thursday, November 5 // SETTING at @mannysstatecollege with Wednesday Knudsen and Pat Coyle.

~Killer show~ Snag tickets in Bio or Website- Doors 7PM // All Ages

@settingsounds is the trio of Nathan Bowles (Pelt, Black Twig Pickers), Jaime Fennelly (Mind Over Mirrors, Peeesseye) and Joe Westerlund (Califone, Sylvan Esso, Jake Xerxes Fussell), bringing together strings, synthesizers, harmonium, percussion, tapes, zither and more into hypnotic, deeply textured instrumental music.

Following their acclaimed 2023 debut Shone a Rainbow Light On on Paradise of Bachelors, the group developed its improvisational approach through extensive live performances, culminating in their self-titled second studio album and debut for Thrill Jockey—a meeting of spontaneous creation, compositional rigor, polyrhythmic grooves and richly layered sound.

Setting has been presented by Big Ears, Black Mountain College Museum, The Lab, Public Records, Solar Myth and others, with 2026 appearances including Solid Sound at MASS MoCA, Pickathon, Sound & Gravity and Suoni Per Il Popolo.

@wednesdayknudsen is a multi-instrumentalist experimental musician living in upstate New York. Her work engages an interplay between compositional and improvisational approaches, exploring interactions of environmental context and notions of occasion with given sets of dynamic parameters. She has performed and recorded both as a solo artist and with many groups, including Pigeons, Weeping Bong Band, Willie Lane, Stella Kola, Kryssi Battalene, P.G. Six and Sunburned Hand of the Man.

@pat_haleycoyle opens the night up- Pat is a Manny’s favorite, a uniquely creative drummer, songwriter and side musician for many a touring artist. We are thrilled to have him on this stellar bill!

Today’s Daily Yinz is “Water Climb” by @pat_haleycoyle. It’s a beautiful, floating ballad that conveys, without cliche or sentimentality, how it actually feels to love somebody. Check out the track and full write-up at Bored In Pittsburgh (link in bio).

Roulette yesterday!!! Thank you, New York! It was a beautiful time with you! I’m already on my way to Mexico. I’m thinking about everyone I met on my American tour — noble and wonderful people. Thank you for inviting me and for being there! See you very soon!!!

A journey through the misty, still-wintery Appalachian Mountains is an otherworldly experience. You absolutely feel like a traveler. Nature pulses here even in winter. The train from Philadelphia changes along the way, and halfway through it is filled with Amish and Mennonites. It’s cold, so when we reach our destination, the conductor gathers everyone into a tiny waiting room. The Amish have a total sense of humor! I’m dying with laughter. I’m the only non-Amish person there, together with a man of Czech Jewish origin. He speaks about losing his family during the war; I speak about my own Eastern European history—and when the Amish hear these topics, they begin to pray. The air smells of baked cake and old fabrics. It’s warm, and we, along with that little waiting room, seem to float above the world.
Then the concert at Manny’s! Firts drummer Pat with amazing touch! The energy of the people is incredible, and the fog stays outside. On this journey, I met people with open hearts—people determined to be and to create together. Webster Bookstore this morning. A book by Idris Shah was waiting as if just for me. What a selection! Corey, thank you for everything! Thank you all, and see you very soon!!!
Yours,
Raphael
